View Full Version : A Stupid Mistake

I think I may have gotten myself into a bit of a problem with my watercooling.
You may or may not know that this project has been ongoing for over two months now with order delays meaning I can't complete what should have been completed a LONG time ago.
Well I have everything in my case ready and waiting for two little damn adaptors to arrive at PCLinks so I can order them. My problem is down to my own ... over excitement, or need to do something. I hooked up the pump relay after finally figuring out how insanely easy it is for any idiot to do.
Can you see where this is going?
I have everything hooked up and fitted into the case and after fitting the pump relay realised (a day or two later) that the pump will now turn on ONLY with the computer fully assembled  So I can't leak test the system without the risk of actually frying my computer if it does leak.
Other than praying can any suggest any way I can safeguard my components should a leak occur?

ok
cut at the power line splice a regular connection back on run your pump test it with out powering up you cpu.
(remember LOTS of towles {towels are our best friend})
Also remember the only power in your system should be your pump.
take the splice off reconnect and shrink tube to make it look nice and hopefully everything will work out ok.
hey its lots of work but it beats frying your rig.
or you can chance it and mabe it leaks and mabe it dont?

If its a Swiftech relay just use the second set of connectors on the relay that are used for fill-bleed then it will run without the puter being on.

You can run the system without the actual hardware in the case, can't you? Just short the green wire and a black wire on your ATX connecter and the PSU should turn on, not sure about the meanwell one, though.

NY and Drake I'm not sure what you mean, I'm using the Swiftech PRS but don't follow your ideas ... I'm no electricion LOL
I reckon I might be able to remove the PRS and reattach a regular plug to the pump to run it. It's a little messing around, but better than frying my system.
Good news is the parts I have been waiting for have turned up at PCLincs and I have been able top place an order which should show up in a day or two :)

why not conect the relay to the 12V rail? then when psu goes on pump does too.. now... here is the trick.. get a piece of wire and short the contacts on the relay then plug in the pump... pump should run alone... then take off the wire pump will turn off... then when u turn on psu the 12V activates ralay and turns pump on and off acording to PSU... ill draw a diagram for u

Sounds insane and dangerous too me ... and as I keep saying, I'm no electricion. I want to keep it simple, wiring a new plug to the pump is simple and something I know I can do without breaking anything LOL

ok... the relay doesnt realy look like that inside...
all you have to do to turn on the pump without the PSU turning on is put the PINK wire in there...
(careful the line will be enersized... unplug the pump and PSU)

I haven't actually seen one of the swiffy relays, but here's an idea that should work - get yourself a 240v rocker switch (about 50p from Maplin) and wire it across the NO contacts on the relay (where the pink jumper is in Brinky's diagram). Then you can just flick the switch to bypass the relay and force the pump to "on". Works just dandy for my homemade relay.

in the great scheme of things, after 2 months wait, two days are a walk in the park.
i have fara's old 3/8 WC rig (pics in the gallery) for a week or two now, ive wanted to make the swap NUMEROUS times but won't until the cpu is unlocked, i get the right water, and i put heatsinks on some other chips on the board.
I dont need to be another "horror" story in the forums.
i will try to document and photograph the affair in the coming days since this is my 1st water box.
they say haste makes waste and i can give you a hundred examples personally to validate that statement!
wait to do it right i suggest, its allways better in the Long run!!!
good luck!
:Brinky>drawing that coil in mspaint must have been a bitch huh?:)

Well my computer is sat on the floor in many pieces right now. I reattached a standard plug to the pump and took everything out of the case before working on my watercooling system ... and boy am I glad I did.
First mistake was not putting the lid on the res I bought from PCLincs (I wouldn't recommend using this res after the many problems I've had with it). Water went everywhere, but luckily no damage.
Then I found that the input connector on the pump leaked. Sealed it with some sealant for aquariums and it seems ok.
Now the biggest problem is with the res (yet again), the damn thing has a lid so you can use a submergable pump in it. Problem is the lid is in no way watertight, you HAVE to seal it yourself or your screwed, trust me. Right now I'm waiting for the sealant to dry so I can have it all running.
Oh well, at least my computer is safe :)

if don't plan on using a submersed pump then maybe you should consider the danger den reservoir
yeah, i've nvcer heard of a problem with it. i've heard you can put it upsidedown, and it won't leak. with the red top and clear sides... and it only $25
