Right,

my venerable ABIT KT7A-RAID is about to bite the dust i think. Crashes, dosent like starting up, all sorts of beep codes.

so, time to buy a new one.

at the mo, i have a duron 750 (overclocked of course) 2 sticks of crucial DDR2100 Cas2.5 ram, Geforce 2mx, 40 GB WD hard disk, DVD-ROM, CD-RW, sound blaster live.

been rooting around today seeing what i can get. One that caught my eye was a gigabyte board ( http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/products/7vrxp.htm )

there is also the soltek board i quite like as well (mainly cos its purple:) ) http://www.soltek.de/English/product/75drv5.htm

is it worth having a look at these, or do i just go for a kr7/kx7 and have done???

thanks for the imput

If you're buying soon, i'd go for the best KT333 mobo out there and that means the Abit KX7 or the Epox 8k3a. Obviously I'm biased, but my vote would be for the KX7. Not only is it a fast mobo, but very stable too. Abit has really improved in the last year or so in the stability department.

Either of these mobos can be had pretty cheap now. I've seen the KX7 going for as low as $95 USD. You get a whole lotta speed and tweak options for that price.... a very good deal indeed. You can likely find the Epox even a little cheaper than that.

If you can wait a month or so, the KT400 mobos should be out by the end of July or August. These will sport AGPX8, DDR400, an enhanced memory controller, and a few other goodies. So if you can wait, that would be the best route.

But if now is the time, you couldn't go wrong either the KX7 or 8k3a:)

hmmmmm,

am tempted to get a KX7, but i can only afford the non-raid version, and i dont think i would ever use the board to anything like its capabilities

hence going for something a little cheaper, but with more features :)

any thoughts?

If you don't plan on doing any intense overclocking, the Soltek mobo is a fine choice. If has lot's of nice features and is reasonably priced too.

The only downside to the mobo is a lack of real overclocking features. So if that isn't an issue, you have a good choice in the Soltek.
