Mine's on its way from Amazon... should get it l8r this morning
I've got an idea of what it looks like already, coz I d/l the full intro movie used in the game, and it only whetted my appetite ;) But I've read reports/posts of/by some players who regretted buying it for one reason or another (spec/system requirements and longish load times seemed to be the main points of contention), but the genuine/unbiased reviews I've read are more upbeat about the game, so I'm personally looking forward to playing it very much indeed :utplasma:
BTW: Why do many of the smilies in you guys impressively long list not have their corresponding text beside em? I woz looking for one or two suitable 'fragging' smilies to add to the one above, but most of 'shooting'-type smilies are blank (for me anyway), and I don't know their default :xxx:

been playing it a couple of days now, pretty sweet, not that bad of a story, and lots eye candy.

From the Gamespot review at: http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/reviews/0,10867,2910117,00.html (They gave the game a 7.3)
Because the missions are strictly linear and because there's no multiplayer, there isn't much incentive to play Unreal II again after the roughly 10 hours it takes to beat the game on normal. It has really good graphics, and, apart from its awful dialogue, it's certainly not painful to play--but it lacks the spark that separates truly great shooters from all the rest. It doesn't have Halo's vehicles and clever AI, Serious Sam's over-the-top action and spectacular boss battles, No One Lives Forever 2's inspired level design, or Medal of Honor's memorable set pieces. As shooters go, it's competent but for the most part unremarkable
From the Gamespy review: http://www.gamespy.com/reviews/january03/unreal2pc/
If you're looking for about 10 hours of mindless entertainment, you'll certainly have some fun with Unreal II before tossing it on the shelf. But for that type of money, there are plenty of other quality action games with more replay value. If you absolutely have to pick up an Unreal game, you might be best served to pick up a budget copy of The Wheel of Time and wait until you can find Unreal II on sale.
For the actual write-up contained at Gamespy, they should have given it less than a 76, more like a 65. I mean, they recommend not to buy the game until it's on sale?
I don't always trust reviews, but after playing UT2003 and not being impressed as much as I thought I should be, I wondered about Unreal2 as well. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the game, Player 0, after you've gone through it a bit. :)

I'd have to agree with the gamespot review. They hit the nail on the head.

Huh... all that anticipation for nothing :(
I haven't been able to play the game for more than 5 mins at a time before it throws up a GPF and kicks me outta the game
I'm one extremely unhappy teddy at the mo', and right in the mood t' send Infogrames an email explaining the problem, and attaching the GPF text t' see if they can make anything of it (it means jack to me!).
I don't know what the problem could be personally, coz I've got pretty much up-to-date software and hardware (WInXP Home SP1/Ti4600 GS/Audigy Plat'm EX/1GB PC2700 etc), plus all the latest updates and drivers installed!
Although I kept the resolution down to 1024x768, in-game it looked as if it woz runnin' in 800x600... B]and[/B] it woz jerky as hell
Once I've cooled down a bit, I'll give it another go with various options lowered/turned off (e.g. EAX) t' see if they help, but I shouldn't have t' be doing that wi' a newly released game, when much older games can handle high resolutions wi' everything turned up/on without a hiccup  [

Sorted :D
Before flying off the handle at anybody via email, I visited a couple o' forums (e.g. this one (http://www.ina-community.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=281)) t' see if any problems had been reported already... and what d'ya know... EAX!
Why is it that EAX is almost always one o' the first features in a game t' cause problems? More importantly... why isn't it one o' the first features the games developers don't get sorted out prior to release
Anyways... I simply disabled EAX (it's actually disabled as default, but... having a 5.1 system, I like t' use it) and the game's runnin' smooth as silk at 1280x1024 wi' everything turned on - except EAX od course :D
The moral... if any of ye experience similar problems after installation, try it again with EAX disabled ;) If the problem persists, visit the a/m forum.
BTW: Epic/Creative Labs are currently working on an EAX 'fix'. Future developments will be posted on this (http://www.ina-support.com/faq/unreal2_pc.asp) forum ;)

I haven't shelled out for UT2003 yet either,.. but that I will eventually get. I barely played the original Unreal,.. but UT was my addiction for ages,.. so my guess,.. eye candy or no,.. i will never even go through the whole of Unreal II,.. the last time I did do that with an FPS,.. was Quake II lol.
Is the Unreal II game engine the same as UT 2003?

Okay....sorry. Obviously I like it:D I forgot to come back to post.
In a nutshell...the game moves fairly quickly. It's main attraction is indeed the eye candy. Very nice to look at.
Action is good...but a bit predictable.
Plot is intriguing enough to keep me playing.
All in all it's a whole bunch of very good looking, mindless fraggin'. But...every now and then, that's what I'm looking for.
If you want something revolutionary in FPS, forget it. But if you want to get some stress out, not have to think real hard, and enjoy the real nice visual show...than the game is very good.

Edited for prosperity.
This game is pretty poor.

I posted about the game, but it went away heh.
Unreal has always been a DirectX engine. I'm not sure I've ever seen it running GL?
Anyway...the game looks great. The enemy animations seem to be a little choppy, and the close quarters fighting has been conjested I've thought. I haven't played a lot of this game yet thought. The eye candy is incredible for sure. I need to play more to give it a fair assumption. I also had to disable EAX cause it crashes.

I like Unreal II despite all the people and reviews saying otherwise. I maxed out all the settings (except resolution) and use EAX, and the game runs smoothly without a hitch.
Admitedly it's not innovative, but there's only so much you can do with an FPS before it becomes a hybrid and something too different to what FPSs are all about.

I'm still waiting for UT2 to reach a store near me. :(

I got my copy from Game, HMV also has it in stock.
Onto the game (again), I completed it. Took a cumulation of about 6 hours, maybe less. It's not a bad game, looks sweet and has a semi-ok storyline ... but it's short. You're left feeling that there should have been more ... a lot more.
Dunno if I'll play it again now it's completed, which would be a shame considering how long I've had the game and the price of it.

In case anybody is having problems with EAX, and doesn't know about it... there's an EAX 'fix' available here (http://www.ina-support.com/faq/unreal2downloads_pc.asp) ;)
It's a replacement .dll file which addresses crashes related to EAX support. It deals with no other issues :)
