thats what u'll have 2 do for the next gen of atlons if they don't put heatspreaders on them!!!!!!

what do u mean?

they keep getting fragile... they need t put a d*mn heatspreader on them, so regular bolts could be used for retention

except that you wont be able to cool it as well. Plus heat spreaders cost more. and amd is in the red

Yep...if I had my druthers, I'd prefer no heat spreader. There is no telling what thermal material will be applied (and how it is applied) between the core and the heatspreader. There is nothing better than direct die contact. I've never cracked a core and I'm on at least a few hundred socket a installs.

how many pounds do u need to put on the core to crack it?
(so i know what springs should i use..)

I saw a heatspreader for XPs on akibia one day. It was just a cap that went over the core.

Just be careful when you mount the HSF and you should be cool. :)

AMD's recommended clamping pressure is 20lbs, IIRC.

yeah, but more clamping pressure would make up for the thermal resistance.

Just remembered the artical at [H] the heat spreader jumped off the p4 core when the metal was chilled / heated too much and crushed the core.
no spreader for me!

youve mounted a heatsink before... so just use your judgement on how tight the tightest standard socked clamp was...then 1/2 that for each of 4 springs.. i imagine that would be safe

i mounted a new HS and that sliped teh screw driver a pouple times... with the srpings... i compresed almost the whole spring
