I'll be getting a DVD rom this weekend and was wondering if it possible to burn a DVD to one CD. thanks
a DVD contains upwards of 4 or 5 GB normally, so doing a straight burn onto a media type that can only take 700mb isnt going to work.
if were talking about videos here, you can get something like flask mpeg and convert your DVD video into mpeg4 or divx, doing this you might be lucky and get the video down to 700mb, but if you go for better quality its going to be over a single CD (say around a gig or about 50mins per CD)
hope this is some help

Hi Snowman
As MrP as already stated it is possible but only with the loss of detail and sound quality which comes with compression...DivX being a popular example, but if you would prefer to play on a newish standalone DVD player you would use VCD or SVCD (which most modern DVD players play..and even newer play DivX if you can find one ;) ).
It can be done..and with a little practive with great results, if you've seen any of the DivX dvd 'rips' available, illegally, on the web you will know what I mean.
My personal preference is to rip to DivX rather than VCD or SVCD...but I'm happy to watch on the PC..and if all else fails my graphics card has a TV out and I've some very long audio cable :D
There are dozens of available downloads to help you on the way, but a little advice from someone who has tried most.. forget the idea of ONE piece of software to do it all for you! The results are never as good as the alternative routes. I use Guardian Knot, which is a suite of programs which does everything from the decryption of the DVD through to the audio dubbing....see http://www.atlandide.net/~uncasms/en/index.php for the full rundown on how to do this.
and a couple of other links for info..
http://netti.nic.fi/~temp/easydivx/ --- a good attempt at a simple one software solution.
http://www.doom9.org/ --- every thing you wanted to know about backing up your DVDs
http://www.riphelp.com/articles/dvdripping.html --- a couple of similarly good ripping guides.
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ --- more info..not easy to navigate but guides on how to rip to VCD or SVCD too
i'll just let the master answer next time then shall i squeaky ;)

thats MR Master to you Earthling Dog!..or should that be Dogs Body ;)
I can only admit to have ripped 4 DVDs..however, I tried 6 different software suites to do this..with poor results (damned Interlacing!) until I turned to Guardian Knot and fought my way through the instructions seen as the terminology was completely boggling to me
Then there was the time it took...but hell that was with my old 1.5gig athie ;)
Mr Master eh?!?!?!?!?!
just you wait till liz finds out!!!!
