well i had my first negative episode with water cooling last night, i wanted to make sure there where no air pockets in my heater core so i put my comp on sleep mode and started to tap on the rad while shutting the flow valve on and and off, while i was doing that i had to go to the kitchen to do some thing, i got cought up in what i was doing and forgot about the pc, meawhile my brother woke the pc and loged on the web, when i came back to my room i didn't realize that my cpu was runnig dry then boom! it crashes, i touched the block( maze 3 copper top) and it was like touching a hot iron, it burned my finger. i thought that was it for my mobo and cpu, i pulled the plug right away.
after inspecting the case i noticed the valve shut. not good. "now i remember" i said to my brother. i thought the system was fried. i waited a few minuted to turn on the pc and it booted without a hitch! but the cpu temp was 143f so i let it cool off for a fews hours

wooo...your a lucky man:)
You might wanna remove the block and put down some fresh paste now. Real high temps can burn it up pretty good.

You are lucky! Your cpu probalby would have cooled down faster if you turn the h2o on right away. Running or not.
I once setup a P4 2.66ghz w/o plugging in the cpu fan. About 2 hours later and just about finished with setup, It shut down. I touched the HS and ouch! LOL
It was perfectly fine a few minutes later. I wouldnt worry much about it. Im pretty sure that the temperature stepping was disabled too.

I had a Fan on my Dragon Orb 3 die on me one time. Didn't know until the computer started crashing every few hours on me. I always just rebooted it (I didn't have the time till the weekend to play with it yet, and it was a Wednesday). Saturday rolls around so I took a better look at it and couldn't find any driver problems or anything. So I took a look inside and saw the fan wasn't spinning, so I touched the Heatsink to see what the temp was like ........ HOLY *&%@ Batman! Stopped the computer and went into the BIOS to check the temps. A whopping 89 celsius!!
The Fan was only 2 months old and the place I bought it from didn't want to replace it, so I brought the receipts in from all the stuff I had bought in the last couple months from them. About $2,500 worth. They said then they would replace it. I said no thanks and went somewhere else and bought a new one :D Gawd I love doing that! Treat me right, before you see how much I spend :)

Hey ralf,
I did something similar once. I unplugged my pump cause i had to do something, don't remember what. But I finished what i was doing and just pushed the power button, not thinking. I left went downstairs to get something to drink. Came back up and it was off. I was thinking WTF? So I turned it back on again, once again is shut off after POST. I did it one more time before i remembered about unpluggin the pump. Plugged her back in, prayed that nothign was broken and turned it back on. Ran fine ;) Was I lucky, yes. But I had a new cpu on the way at the time.

i was so conserned about something like that happening that installed a self made relay system for automatic pump power because i thought maybe my brother would some day foget to turn on the pump, but i need to stop worring about my brother frying things and watch what i do with my pc before it catches on fire or something.
well, i think what saved the cpu was the fact that my block is the copper top and not the lucite top. i think if had been the lucite top the cpu would had fried and block top ( lucite) could had melted, maybe who knows?
i don't know about putting a new coat of paste, i din't smell anything burned, i just felt heat on my fingers! i am also getting similar cpu temps as before but i will check under the block on the weekend
i am glad to hear that none of you guys have any horror stories so far

Hi ralf_c,
Agree here with mdzcpa on new paste.
High heat tends to make the thermal paste less effective.
It only takes a minute to do it, but the temps could be higher, if not replaced.
Take care........
HOLY COW!!!!!!! your lucky it didn't fry. thats why many get the coppertop, but this is the first time i've ever heard it being put to work

Hey guys,
My block had the lucite top on it ;) But in ralfs situation it may have affected it more than it did in mine.
Now i get to try frying something w/ a tec :D
