Was sick of the network cable coming loose whenever I moved the laptop. So, I finally broke down. Went to best buy tonight and got a Linksys 802.11g access point/broadband router and a matching PCMCIA wireless card. It took me a good while to get the router working with Road Runner cause of their two MAC address provisioning policy (basically, they provision the account with the MAC address of the cable modem AND the first PC you had hooked up, which is no longer up in my case). Anyway, i found the right MACs, did MAC emulation on the router, set up encryption and everything, and now we're working great.
802.11g is great, and I highly recommend it! Anyone interested in my old non-wireless cable router?

Ahhh 802.11G very nice...But I though you had installed a Gigabit router? are you still using that for your main backbone?

Oh no...I sold the gigabit setup to Bkpaul about a week after I got it working. The performance was only 2-3x that of regular 100BT. Not worth the insane costs. It would have been cheaper just to install two NICs per server and use NIC bridging (which gives you double the speed).
Yeah, I'm really glad I waited for 802.11g. I have used 802.11b before, and it was okay and all. But the distance wasn't as good as 802.11g I dont think. Plus 54mbps makes the file transfers much more bearable :) The laptop works all over the house now, and I always get GREAT signals. This one is 2.4ghz. The wireless router and nic came to $250, but I should have $30 in rebates coming. Its not really that much more than a standard 802.11b get up. I think :)
Well worth the money either way. Im sick of being tethered to a cable that may or may not work depending on the angle of my rocking recliner ;)

Hi guys,
I was wondering if nic bridgeing is possible under windows?
and will I require twin switches for the bridged setup?
All thoughts welcome.

Yep, you can do it with Windows XP, and maybe 2k. You need two NIC cards, and each one needs to be connected to your switch. Its pretty easy to do. I did this at work where I would be accessing multiple servers at once. For a home set up, it may not be worth while. What are you trying to do?

On and off for a few months now, I have been playing with a beauwolf cluster, just for fun. 4 x p75 oc to 120mhz....3 nic cards per box and 3 layered switches. All running under linux.
My plan was to learn as much as I could b4 transferring that knowledge to 4 celeron 366's @ 460 in a similar setup.
All the way, battling against my beginner linux knowledge.
I guess I just never considered that multiple nic cards would be possible on an M$ platform.
Most of what I'm working on at the moment is purely to increase my knowledge base. So any tips or onfo will be welcome.
Cheers,
