Hey um...problem here

hey all,
umm im about to wipe my hard drive, i already backed up all my stuff, because umm... my laptop, the hard drive is like..."crackling" all the time now, since 2 nights ago, and i didnt do anything significant...and the weirder part...after exactly 14 minutes...it shuts down the hard drive...NOT the computer...the computer just sits there and you cant do anything, but the hard drive goes..."were were weru weru ru ru u u u...." to silence...complete silence. well, is that weird to anyone else? its a dell, about 8 months old...inspiron 8200...i have no idea, MOST likely a virus from email...*first one ever if it is for me....* so ya, ill be wiping my hard drive tonight...*its 3:45am* church in the morning at 10:30 lol....so anyway, wish me luck...tty as soon as i hopefully have a computer back :D cya...

Hi Jetrunner,

Sorry about your PC, but to me it sound like it's mechanical.
I've never heard of a virus that made a harddrive sound like that.
I would buy a new harddrive shortly.

Hi Jet,

Welcome back.

Make sure the PM is not engaged.

Check to see if the H/D is scheduled to shut down after 15 minutes and go into either sleep state or hibernation.

I have a couple laptops at work that go into sleep and/or hibernation and will not come back out, without cold boot.

i just wiped the drive, reinstalled completely new xp home, and its running fine so far...hopefully it stays...if it happens again im sure ill just get a new HD. Thanks for the suggestions though, and the luck :) it worked so far :D ! thx all,
