View Full Version : Cheapest 'good' mobo?

Greetz all.

Got a friend in dire straits. He needs a new mobo that wont put a hole in his pocket but won't kill his performance/stability either. He needs 4x AGP and at least three PCI slots. Being able to run PC2700 and 166MHz FSB would be a plus, but isn't needed. The price range is sub-$80. Anyone with suggestions?

Yeah, that'd be... me. I've been thinking the MSI KT4VL and Drake suggested the KD7-E to me. Either looks fine, although I'd take the MSI cause of the agp 8x, and DDR 400.

Anyway, I have 44 dollars but good ole Drake is willing to lend me money :) Thanks man

How I managed to screw my motherboard (Soyo KT333 Dragon Lite) over: Well, my Dragon Orb 3 fan has been squeaking/making various noises. I told my dad about it, and he decided there that we were going to Frys and getting a new one. Now my mom objected to this, and as usual she made us get the best unit for the price - a Volcano 9. So I get home and installed it and the motherboard doesn't want to work properly. Apparently, whenever something tries to boot or load something to ram, I get a blue screen or a reboot.

I slightly remember accidentally hitting a screwdriver by the third DIMM slot, so that screwed me over. And I tried switching my memory to different slot with no luck

My dad is going to kill me.. but I took some of the heat off now that I have some sort of plan.

Anyway, any advice/help would be greatly appreciated!

:beerm8s: Welcome Sparhawk :beerm8s:

Sorry to hear about your situation.

I'd have to give my nod to the KD7-E. MSI is a good board and if you plan on keeping it for a while it is a bit more "future proof" than the KD7-E. 8x AGP doesn't offer much over 4x and DDR400 is more hype than it's worth if you're overclocking the FSB.

You're in good hands with drake :) He'll make sure that you get all you can out of your system.

Hi Sparhawk and :D :D Welcome :D :D to Liquid Ninjas!!

I'am now a big fan of abit, once you own an abit board you'll never look back. I love my KD7,would only trade it for and KD7-E or KD7-R. So if I was in your shoes i'd go with the KD7-E. Don't get me wrong, I like MSI they make quality boards, But if your lookin for a nice o/c board with some gooides, go with the KD7-E.

Good luck with whatever board you choose, and watch that screwdriver ;)

Once again welcome to LN.

Thanks for the info :)

Either board would be perfectly fine for me actually. I'm leaning towards the MSI board tho for the extra thigns.. although I probably won't take advantage of them, heh. I do overclock a lot, so that Abit board is grabbing me by the throat after looking at the specs...

But this is going to come down to price, whichever costs the least out of the two I am most likely going to get.

Not having money sucks :(

I've seen the KD7-E going for $79 HERE at MWave (http://direct.mwave.com/mwave/ProdMB-ABIT.hmx?UID=&CID=&updepts=MB&DNAME=%3Cb%3EMotherboards%3C%2Fb%3E&back=ProdMB-ABIT.hmx?)

Although I can completely understand the attraction to a mobo with more features (MSI), you will never touch a better overclocking mobo for the money with the KD7-E.
