Major LAG problem with my NETWORK (I need help bad)
Okay here's the deal, I have 2 computers (p3 900 dlink network card) and the pc you see in my sig with a dlink network card (both computers running WIN XP pro). I am using the D-link DI-604 router and I follwed the manual step by step to the letter to set up the network. Previously I had an SMC router which is a little less than this router, and it was giving me the same problem that xp is giving me. The original problem I thought with the SMC router was that it was blocking the ports I wanted to use so both computers can Play HL:CS (half-life counter-strike). Everytime one computer played a game like HL:CS or UT2k3, it was okay. But the second another person connected to a CS server (any cs server) while another person was already playing your pings would both spike up from like 30 to about 2000-4000 making the game unplayable. That is the problem I thought was caused by the SMC router, so I exchanged the SMC router for the D-Link DI-604 router. I thought this would fix the problem, but it didn't I still have the same problem especially when trying to play CS. I've try'ed installing the latest firmware, reseting the router, restarting it, all the way to reinstalling the router several times. It's the same problem, playing games on battle.net is okay, eg when both computers connect they can play warcraft, starcraft, and diablo 2 together fine, but when it comes to CS or games like CS where you have to connect to a server, it just lags like a bitch, please comment I'm sure i'm not the only one having this problem/ have had this problem. Also I know its not the fact that my DSL doesn't have enough bandwidth as cable because we can't even play a LAN game of CS without lagging. I have a feeling it has something to do with Windows XP a little but I have nothing to base that on.

( ITS definatly not bandwidth because i cant even lan game without lag )

Hi SpaZeD,

Are these two boxes actually networked, or are they using the router for two seperate IP Address from your one connection?
If that is the case. insure that the cable is going into the correct input hole. and the two systems are connected to the correct pipes also.

Let's go from there and see where we go.

Also, :D :D WELCOME :D :D to Liquid Ninjas. Good to have you aboard and posting.

Take care, and let us know what happens..........

are you using router pppoe or does an xp box sign on for you?
what is in between your phone line and the 1st computer? dsl modem? is modem plugged in a wan port? also check your event logs in xp, there might be a service not starting properly, dhcp or static? lots of possibilities! we want to help.

i like where lech is going with this one. are you using the router to hand out ips to your boxes or are you running a static config? and btw what is your internet connection dial up dsl cable satellite or what. im an isp tech working with these exact problems hehe but need some info. also what firewall stuff do you have set up ?

My connection is DSL, i'm using the PPPoe setting and I'm running win XP pro on both of them, I did an ip config on both of them and got the ips 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.102 Using a D-Link DI-604 router. I pluged the cable from the dsl modem into the WAN part, and 1 cable from 1 computer to port 1, and another cable from computer 2 to port 2. They're both using Dlink 530 TX network cards, so it's all there for you. What i'm worried is this is the same problem that occured with the SMC router and I think it has something to do with the OS im runnong on both of them, btw the XP firewall is disabled, and I uninstalled QoS packets on both and installed client network thingy, on both, the protocol. I know someone out there has had to have this sort of problem before.:2guns:

is your router 192.168.0.xxx? same subnet? same dns info?

you might try setting your lan side to static ip's instead of DHCP. also do you have netbios installed? set each of your computers to like 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.3 and config the ports in the router to the same and see how that helps. i have a network of 6 comps all with xp and used to see lots of lagsville till i set the router to hand out statics.
