Which event made you take notice the most?

Hi all,

I have to go with DDR Memory.
Vid speed doesn't do much for me, as I don't game, and don't need blazing frame rates.
I DO need fast memory.

Take care........

the r300 is the biggest thing, but the NF2 and dual channel ddr and the granie bay and placer a bit too are definately a big step in the right direction. now we only need faster storage, and some better backup:D

I dont think the video card wars was very abnormal. Dont forget that at the beginning of the year, TI4600 spanked the 8500 monkey :) They always go back and forth.

The biggest event (or non-event) was the hammer no show. Not only did this allow Intel to remain the speed champion for another year, it forced many loyal AMD users to migrate to the darkside. Competition is good, and Intel finally lowered their prices, a little. But you notice, without threat from AMD, Intel is more expensive again. Nothing could have been possibly worse for AMD then not having the Hammer ready when they needed it the most. They have been fighting an uphill battle, and they simply cant afford to loose so much ground. Even as promising as Hammer is, they will now have to start climbing ground like they did when they first released Athlon.

Im an athlon fan. Yet, I have a dual xeon box to the right of me, and a P4 laptop in front of me. AMD put so much faith in to a technology they cant deliver, they forgot about other technologies such as Mobile and SMP. Not to mention a slipping desktop market. Only on the budget market have they gained ground, and thats where they already were back with the K6. Is this where AMD wants to be???

They had it man. They had it in the bag technology wise. They had a product that could compete with Intel. But they made some extremely bad management decisions. Well here's hoping they fire Colonel Sanders and get some real direction again in 2003. And dammit, they NEED to make chipsets. Dont be afraid to look like Intel. Lets see a dual MP board with DUAL CHANNEL DDR! What the heck is the problem here? Here's a novel idea...let people use XPs in SMP configurations with out modifications. Keep MP around for the business guys who can afford the premium of compatibilty testing. But dont lock out the XP guys. Promote the growth of cheap SMP. Thats the damn future guys. Not one fire-poker hot CPU doing all the work. But 2 or 4 smaller/cooler processors sharing the work load.

If Via could make SMP C4's, add in any sort of decent FPU, that could be quite an impressive solution.

Okay, end rant.

Good comments Tom. I was hoping this Poll would generate some thought provoking discussion:)

I hope it continues.

I went for DDR ram also... as it was a turning point for all PC's to come, not just small niche market for an R300 or a small chipset battle among socket-a. Not only that... but the speed of the ram was becoming a limiting factor on the higher end pc's, and it has uncorked a nice bottleneck. DDR ram also remains price competitive, and beat out intels RDRAM for the mainstream market. well.. that's my $0.02

good thread mike :cool3:

i voted DDR, it unleashed a whole new world for me in the OC department even my Crucial was cheap enough to get 512 w/o breaking me!

I voted ddr as well, it not only has speed up every ddr system... but has also worked magic in video cards, forced rambus to be cheaper, it has also contributed to declining pc133 costs... now you can get 512 for around $35. i dont think anything else has helped computers more

on the other hand tho, hyper threading may be the wave of the future too

Yup Drake I'm getting that impression also. I've also seen the barton on the 7th.

Sooo it should be November before we can get our hands on it :D
