Hi all smee again,
I've done alot more reading since my last questions, now I need the benefit of your experience once more.
Each of the machines in my house is doing something all be it small or intermittent.(I like to tinker with robotics and home automation amongst other things.) When you're running the f@h client, can you leave it in the background and do other things to any extent?
I get the impression from posts that I have read that the screensaver is lackluster in performance. On my main machine that I use daily am I better off running the SS version or turning on the console at night?
The last thing is, how much hd space do the work units usually take? Max figures please. Also how much space does it need whilst folding?
This info will help me greatly, I can't wait to join the team and add this small cache to the arsenal of folding machines that you have.

Hi UR
We run folding or SETI 24/7.
We use the systems all of the time, while running the progs and there is no difference in the performance.
Feel free to do whatever you like when the system is running, as it wil not effect the speed of the folding or SETI.
The whole prog of folding and work unit takes approximately 4 megs of H/D space.
Take care........
EDIT: Here is some pertinent info for you to look at/ponder:

Good info Lee:)
I agree that assessment. I run Folding @Home on all my systems 24/7 while running other applications. On very rare occassions if I set up a game server for friends, or I am running performance benchmarks to test system tweaks, I will shut Folding down temporarily. Otherwise they stay on all the time:)

wil not effect the speed of the folding or SETI.It won't affect the speed of the program you are running, but it will affect the speed at which you complete woots. Over an hour of playing UT I got only 6 frames done. Usually I do one every one-and-a-half minutes.

Hi Drake,
"Over an hour of playing UT I got only 6 frames done."
Time to sell that Atari and get a real PC. :D

thanks lechumbl,
Thats better than I expected by a lot.
I gather that is with the most basic console folder(no gui).
Most of my boxes run M$ XP/2000 os at the moment as I am a linux newbie.
My only other pondering, is how happily can F@H client be interupted? How does it handle crashes, restarts or even just stopping the client halfway thru a WU? does it have to start again?
Thanks again for your help, I will have a couple of boxes up tonight.

Hi UR,
Over the last week, we, here in Washington State, have have some very severe weather, high winds, power out, rain, etc.
My systems have been up and down so many times, I am about ready to put a string on them and call them yoyo's.
I lost a hard drive, but no woots or settings.
It recovers at the stop point every time.
That is to say for me, maybe, eventually I will burn, but not so far.
I am running Graphical Client. Doesn't seem to be a problem. It is producing good units and in a reasonable time.
Some of the other folks are running the text only console. Guess they are not having any probs either.
Take care........

FWIW, at home i run both seti AND folding on 5 machines with no real drop in app performance, in the gui and beta ver of folding i move the slider in the properties to share the cpu time better.
if it takes longer to process woots from either i dont care, slow and steady wins the race, ask the turtle.

I'm happy with my Atari, thank you very much :p
Sometimes I'll lose a woot or two during a crash, but I find that if I close the console and start again it'll usually find where it left off.
BTW, if you're using the console close it with ctrl+c. Sorry if this seems obvious, but I lost a dozen or so woots to it .

Are you sure about this? I'm pretty sure that my woots pick up right where they left off if I close the console window manually.
We need to double check this...

I donno. I seem do do everything wron while folding :p. I've found that if you put folding in your Startup folder, it'll start a new woot.

Hi Drake,
I also have Folding in my Startup Folder.
It does not start a new woot, but continues with the current one on reboot/restart.
Time to retire the toy and get a real computer. :D
Take care, my friend.........

Hi again all.
Well I have 3 machines up and folding now 200@233mmx win/textclient, 366celeron @416mhz win/textclient and my xp1600 @1.428 running win graphical client.
That should do 2.5 wu per 12 hrs, judging roughly from the first night.
If someone could diagnose the problem with my sig, that would rock.
I have some concern and little clarity on the subject of installing the text/client. Both my T/C boxes show an error about not being able to find the core and download a new one before each WU.
Is this usual? And what folder in particular{if any} should the client be run from?
Many thanks in advance
UR

I suppose any ol' folder would do. Just make sure you close the proggy with ctrl+C. I was having the same problem and using ctrl+C cleared it up.
Oh, the problem with your sig is that Stanford isn't finding your name. Just give it a day or two and it should clear up though.

Hi unacceptable_risk,
You name does not show on the stats page yet.
As soon as it does, the stats sig will be OK.
It can't find user name, cause you ain't there yet. :)
Give it a couple days or less.
Take care..........

G'day guys,
I was looking at the stanford stats page, accesible from the client itself. Do we only have 21 folders on the team? I think I assumed that there were twice as many.
I am quite keen to involve several mates of mine in the folding team. They are all on modem, as fast internet is stupidly expensive in Aus. Do any of you run modems with folding machines, and how much data needs to be passed when it does?
Meg/Minutes anything?
the Stanford software is pretty good, Im impressed. Also kudos to PlayerO for the wicked sig.

I'm afraid that its difficult to run F@H on dial-ups. If not difficult, then at least a pain in the arse.
