So confused.....

OK, I don’t know what’s wrong, maybe someone here can help. The other day my fan to my cpu became detached, after my heart skipped a few beats I quickly powered down the system, reattached the fan, and powered it back up with that fan on full. All together the CPU (1800+) was on with no fan for about 30 secs. I checked the temp, and was around 180f. At this point it may seem clear what my problem is, and that i'm an idiot. This is where things get interesting. when I try to boot windows (XP pro) it begins to boot, then a get a screen saying that "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"it metions something about disabling the memory cache and something about shadowing in the BIOS, this isn't what I would think a damaged CPU would result in, is it possible the MOBO is damaged? Another interesting thing is that windows was corrupted, I took out my HD and put it into another comp, and I got a different blue screen message saying that the drive may be corrupted and needs to be scanned. I reinstalled windows to and it works fine on my other comp now, I tried another HD im my malfunctioning comp, and I can boot from the CD and format the HD but after a min or 2 of trying to install windows on it, it crashes and I get the PAGE_FAULT blue screen. In closing I am pretty sure the cpu or mobo is toast, I’m just don’t know which. From what I have said does it point to one in particular? I don’t see how it could be anything else EVERYTHING else has been switched out and tested with something else, with the exception of the memory. PLEASE HELP!!!! Thank you

It's very possible the mobo was damaged in the falling of a heavy HSF.

If your temps only reached 180F you should be fine.

I would troubleshoot the CPU in another system, and if that's the problem, a little upgrade never hurt anyone :D.

If the problem persists throughout multiple reinstalls of the OS, the HD may be dead or the mobo may be to blame.

The best way to fix a situation like this is to troubleshoot each piece of suspected hardware alone.

Well i ran some more tests, i installed windows on a driffrent HD on my working Comp, then after making sure it works i tried moving it to the other comp, and i get a message saying that the HD maybe corrupted, ect. i then moved it back to the other computer to see if it works and its fine windows boots up NP. im afraid your right i need to test both the mobo and the cpu, i need to "convince :2guns: " my friend to let me use some of his computer resources :D to further my testing. thanks for your help hopefully i will be up and running soon.

I would reseat the HSF unit with a nice fresh thin coat of thermal paste and double check the temps under the BIOS.

you say everything has been tested with the exception of the memory.???? On my system when my memory went belly up I was greeted with some of the same error messages that you have been getting.....Not saying 100 percent sure that its the memory...but I would do some testing of it just to be on the safeside....

Hey guys,
I've gotten that error before:) It was usually because of to high of an overclock. If your system is o/c nock it down to stock settings to install your o/s. I don't know how the fan falling off for a few seconds would harm much.

The a7v266-e is a pretty forgiving m/b, when i first mounted mine to the case, i put a stand-off where there was no hole in the board (oops) it would power up for 1/2 a second then shut down.
i did this about 10 times b4 i realized what i did. i corrected the error and it has been great ever since. patience, reset the bios and pray to the asus god for forgiveness.

Now, you did get lucky because for some reason the CPU didn't fry when you had the HSF on backwards.

Bah, I just started my OCed 2100+ up without the fan running :eek:. Almost the scariest thing I've ever done. I realized what I did and salvaged it before it was too late *phew* :D

180 degrees out, i rememberd the fan goes away from the cpu though... i wasnt being snippy al, unfortunately inflection in print doesnt allways get read like its said.:) i know thats what smilees are for, i forgot to use one (i have 3 kids, i forget to use alot of things...too):eek:
