Seti Sig 1 going way of the dodo

Im going to phase out version one of the Seti Stats sig by next weekend. Everyone please change over to Seti Stats version 2. As our traffic increases, the load on Seti server becomes insanely high (we're over 25,000 uniques this month). Seti Sig is by far the HIGHEST load on our server in terms of hits and bandwidth. Version 2 will make a huge difference here, which is why im making everyone change.

Is the seti sig 1 being used by peeps on other boards and this is causing the bandwidth problem?
Is there an LN rule agaist using the sig elsewhere?

Its being used by other people on other boards, but this is not the problem. In fact I encourage the use of the SigStats on other sites.

Ive changed the stat update interval on Seti and Folding to 3 hours in order to facilitate more up-to-date stats. We'll see how it goes.

Just to give a further explination, real-time stats needed to go away because of the huge bandwidth requirements. With the old stats signature, every time the signature was loaded on a page (which may be upwards of 20x per page on liquidninjas alone), the program downloaded a copy of Berkeleys stats page for processing. Although this page is small, the sheer amount of traffic we get on our site means that our site is literally downloading gigs and gigs of data each month from Berkeley. Maybe upwards of 20% of our traffic (review images being something like 40%). Its basically like a half dozen people downloading UT2003 from our site each month. All for a silly little stats program. Not efficient.

So, now...instead of downloading data from berkeley, the signatures download data from our SQL database, which runs most of the rest of liquidninjas. This not only saves a tremendous amount of bandwidth, but also makes the signatures run much more quickly, and prevents most cases of downtime. Even version 2 must download the stats page from berkeley, and now does so every 3 hours for each person using the signature. Between folding and seti and other sites I'm allowing to use the signature, we'll still be downloading stats page over 1,000 times per day. About 300-400m per month. Thats still a small CD, but better than 2000-3000m per month like previously. With 6 hour updates, wed only be using 150-200m per month. If traffic becomes an issue later, I may move the updates back to 6 hours, but we'll see how 3 hours works.

BTW...this traffic does NOT include the bandwidth used by generating the seti sig itself (which is about 1k per pop, or 5k per page on average). With 80,000 page views per month, thats another gig or two per month of traffic just for the sig ;)

Sweet...Butt... I frequent one of the busiest off topic b-boards on the net. It's known for it's server rapage and some of the threads I've partaken in have had view counts in the multi-thousands :eek: Should I refrain from using a seti sig on my user account there? Cuz I've been considering it :)
