I got a bunch of old heat sinks could i cut them up and use them to help cool my ram? could i just glue them on with krazy glue?
Or am i just better off just buying some.
thanks

You can certainly use those heatsinks cut up to cool your RAM...in fact, that's not a bad idea at all. However, what you want to use to adhere the heatsinks to the RAM is some good thermal epoxy. You can pick up a small amount of this as it will go a long way. Thermal epoxy not only provides the adhesive properties you need, but also the thermal porperties which are a must for the heatsinks to do there job. Using other substances not designed for thermal transference (ei superglue), will actually create a thermal barrier and not allow the heat to flow from the RAM to the heatsinks.
You can pick up some thermal epoxy from just about anyone who sells fans and HSF units:)

Thanks mdzcpa, I'll check out radio shack to see if thay have thermal epoxy.
I'm off to find a hacksaw :)

I've done just what you've suggested billg. I did go the cheap way 'cause I had no thermal epoxy. What you can do is put a coat of thermal paste on the chip/s but leave a little part without paste on it. About 2-3 mm should be good. then put a drop of crazyglue on the clean spot and mount the heatsink. It will work ,maybe not as god as thermal epoxy and it should be removable if you don't glop on the glue. Good luck

I would agree that this method would work too and save a few bucks along the way:) (like Fara said...not too much glue though)

Ive only used thermal tape strips for my ram..I wonder how much advantage thermal epoxy has over this in terms of ram. My ram usually stays around 35c degrees at 3.00v...which i think is pretty good, but i dont have a baseline for ram temperature comparison.
id love to watercool my ram tho. Where can you find waterblocks for this?

Hay I did some looking around and found this RAM AQUA SINK (https://www.overclockershideout.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=o&Product_Code=RAS&Category_Code=WB)
looks very cool (pun hehe)

You shouldn't really need watercooling on your ram, but maybe use some active cooling? I'll post a pic if I can find a camera... basically I just took a 50mm delta, ripped off the cage, and glued it center on the top of my ram. The ram has silver thermaltake heatsinks on it. Doesn't usually even get warm.

Mine get warm hehe. And I think with the huge chiller im getting, i might get much more power out of those rams with cooling :)

Player - Super-cooling ram won't help your overclock. I remember an article, this guy used LN on his ram but it didn't help, not 1mhz. If you want more proof look at the top ocers, none of them use water or super-cooling on the ram. Hate to burst your bubble. :)

Dexter,
Im not saying your wrong. But I like to try things for myself. I remember people telling me how peltier water chilling would never work. But it does.
This guy who LN cooled his ram was probably limited by his motherboard, which is why he couldnt get the 1mhz more. Or perhaps he didnt try raising his Vmem voltage higher after the cooling.
Im not honestly expecting too much more of an overclock. Maybe I can get ram timings a bit higher, maybe 2-5-2 instead of 2-5-3 at 205mhz. Maybe just extend the life of the ram as I over volt it. The thing is, I have no easy way of getting air flow over the ram in my cube case. And Im reducing the number of fans as I go along. Making more use of the Cubes water chilling system really makes me happy, and things more quiet.
So, its not just me trying to go faster as a reason for doing this. Im trying to extend the life of my ram, and reduce the number of fans in my system. And, I think that the chilled ram blocks paired with the chiller, KX7, and the Vmem mod, I should beable to get a LITTLE more speed out of it.

I'm certainly not going to take sides on this point, but I would really like to see Player0 try it and see what happens.:)

I ordered them today...so we'll see.
I hate removing the ram sinks tho...scary :)

By all means, try it yourself. It probably will extend the life of your ram, and is certainly better than using a fan because of the lower noise. Still... I'd be surprised if it helped your overclock. Good luck never-the-less. :)

i'am gonna agree with mike on this one... there's no sense in argueing.. I read over at another o/c site that watercooling the ram kept it real cool but he did'nt get another Mhz out of it. I would post the link, but i really don't know if that violates our guidelines..If one of the Admins says its ok i will. I think it would be cool just to do it also. Like painting the fins of my fans...begin painted don't really do anything it just looks sweet.
P0, The waterblocks that the guy in the article used were homemade, out of a cheap cpu block, mounted to a peice of aluminum that went over the entire stick of ram, made the same peice for the other side without the wB and insulated it and used these metal paper clip things to hold it to gether. He also used ASIII on each ram chip. (used Samsung PC2700)

Now that is overclocking. Taking something I throw at my co-workers and use it to watercool is bad azz.
Now I have to take the plunge. With the help of Liquid ninjas.

My solution will be much more elegant I hope :)
