I wanted to get an AMD cpu for the computer i use as an internet router. It is on all the time and so i want it to be silent.

I have an old Intel P3 450 in there atm that is near silent buthave upgraded my main computer so i have an AMD mobo spare.

I also have an Athlon TBird 1.4 from old setup but that gets too hot even without OC for low rpm fan.

I wanted to get another cpu for around £30 (so up to Duron 1.3) and underclock (after unlocking i presume) it enough so that i can have a 60mm fan running at ~5v and not get temps above 50 ish.

Any suggestions on cpus and how far i can underclock it.

you can do it a couple of ways

lower the FSB as far as you can (you might find that PCI/AGP cards dont like it though)

lower the multiplier. (unlock then chip and lower it as far as you want) then you will need to lower the voltage, this will take a bit of trial and error to find out how low you can get it.

the other option is to buy a second hand duron running around 700/750 which will still run pretty quiet and give you a decent speed hike

i recon ill get a duron 1.1 and unlock it and lower multiplier to make it about 700 and see what temps i get then.

Fingers xed i can use fan at 5v :D so itll be silent :cool3:

If you want to lower the temperature, you need to decrease the voltage going to the cpu. I would underclock the cpu just a little and lower the voltage as much as you can while staying stable. That should lower the temps alot.

I ended up using my Athlon 1.4 TBird.

I underclocked it to 733MHz and lowered the voltage to 1.35v.

With the fan at 5v and a case temp of 35C i get cpu temps of 42C at both idle and load!!

Not a bad little trick for silent running :D
