Hi all,

I am looking in to digitizing some VHS tapes that I have for later burning onto CD and/or DVD (in the future). Softwhere is free and easy to find. How do I hook the Video out on the VCR to the (video in on the) PC? What hardwear has worked for you?

Any info would be greatly appreciated :cool3:

Youll need a tv/video capture card :)

I ordered the ATI 8500 All-In-Wonder 128mb from NewEgg. (It had the best reviews).

Does anyone do VHS to CD (or DVD)??? Any DVD to CD tips? What software do you use? Is there any good Freeware out there?

Any info would be helpful.

Yes, its a great card. I have the AIW 8500 DV here in my box :)

If you want to burn TV/Video/VHS to CD's, you'll want to use the DivX Pro 5.02 codec (definitely get the Pro version for encoding, not the standard Lite version).

Make sure you have a good CPU for encoding. If you want to do video editing, definitely get lots of RAM. If you want to do video editing, capture your video source in something like MPEG1 or Huffyuv. You'll probably want to invest in some good video editing software. Or download it from someplace ;)

But for your final encoding to CD, youll want to use DivX. For encoding to a DVD, you will want a MPEg2 codec, which comes with some video software, dvd burners, and theres even a Nero patch. I havent tried this yet.

For encoding itself, you can use something like FlaskMPeg (check out flaskmpeg.net). TomsHardware.com has good information on video encoding stuff too

What drivers do I need or what software should I install/run to play a freakin' DVD movie on my computer?

I will install my AIW 8500 tomorrow night. I did go ahead and purchase DivX Pro. But again, what am I missing here? I know real dumb question :(

To play them? Well the 8500 comes with a DVD player, so when in install the software, you can just use that.

Or you can get a 3rd party version like PowerDVD. I use that and it works well
