Hey all
My CD-writer stopped reading blank and burned disks all of a sudden... When I put either in it tries to find it for ~5 minutes then blinks until I take the disk out. No clue what could cause this...
I've tried uninstalling Nero, uninstalled the drive and removed all drivers, etc... nothing seems to work!

Hi Drake,
Sounds like the CDRW is toast.
Does it do it on all disk inserted? If so, the drive is bad.
It could have a dirty head also. There are head cleaners, but they tend to cause more trouble than they fix.
CDRW's are getting so cheap, anymore, it might be worth it just to replace it.
Let us know...........

It reads everything but blanks and burned disks, everything else is fine. This has happened before, but I don't remember how I fixed it.

Hi Drake,
I gave my opinion on the subject.....Replace the CDRW, it is toast.
If that is not the reason, then, can't help.
Take care.........

Head over to the manufacturers site and check out any updated information/firmware/software issues reported. If you using windows or Dos and cannot get the drive to even do a directory display... and you are sure it's hooked up correctly (jumpers, correct cable, nothing tangled/damaged, make certain it's getting power) then it sounds like u need repair work. In that case... I repeat... www.pricewatch.com hehe. good luk
I'm almost sure that it's a laser component.Probably it is in the end. It's the beggining, suddenly it stop at all.I have 9 of them in the same situation. You can try to adjust the trimpot, sometimes it works, sometimes not.
I agree with Lee and 4.6 Power, it's better to buy another, but i can be wrong here.

Arr, just found that burned audio CDs read fine... blanks and other burned materials still are unreadable.
What is the trimpot, sptw?
Hi Drake.
Right, your device can read burned CDaudio, but what CDaudio are you talking about?Original Cds or those that you burn?If you're talking about original Cds Audio, then we are right here, it's better to buy another one.Original Cds Audio have a midia that are more reflective, and it need less power from laser optical device.Blank Cds and CDRW are less reflective and need more power from Laser optical device. Now, if you're talking that it can really read burned CD audio, then check for cables, drivers, and software, because in my opinion your cd-writer is good.
About what is the trimpot, please don't get me wrong , and don't think that i'm try to be rude here, but if you don't know what trimpot is, it's better to forget this option. To adjust the trimpot it's necessary at least a minimal knowledge on eletronic, and it's necessary to open the case of the CDRW and the Laser can really DAMAGE YOUR EYES.i'm only try to be careful here.
Thanks for understand.

it's necessary to open the case of the CDRW Bah, the thought of doing something like that horrifies me anyway... all those nekked chips.
I'm talking about burned CDs, but only the audio ones will play.
Bah, I'm gunna quit trying to fix it and just scrounge up the money to go buy one...
alright Drake, let's try this last option:
I assume that you're on WinXP or Win 2000, then try this:
- remove your burn software, i don't know which one are you using, Roxio, Nero...... but remove it.
- Take Aspi Driver V. 4.72 (http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?sess=no&cat=/Product/ASPI-4.70&filekey=aspi_v472a2.exe) and install it.
- Reboot and install your burn software again.
What did you get?

just in case... i had an old HP cd writer which packed up and kept giving me a "power caliberation fault" whenever i tried to burn.
it turned out that the drive got so hot it actually burnt off all the grease from the inside of the machine so i opened it up and lubed all the bits that needed lubing and it worked fine :) i think my problem was a bit more straight forward than yours and also i was doing it back in the day when cdrws were about £150 and too expensive to just buy again... but you never know
