I was digging around for info and realized that I didn't know much about getting started in Folding. So I threw down some quick info here about what I learned getting the process going. Maybe it will be helpful to someone.

It's all new to me too, so my help will be very limited. I'm sure others who know Folding better than I can step in later and give much better advice, but for now I offer this...:)

Like SETI, I chose to run only the Console version (without graphic). So that's the one I downloaded.

Download the v3.14 Console app. Run it in the directory you want to keep it in. It should take you through a set up routine inside the Console (MSDOS window). When this happens, it will ask you for your user name, team number, and machine ID and a few other questions.

Make sure you run the "set up" app on each system. Do not copy files or directorys from machine to machine.

Your user name will be registered the first time you set up folding under that name.

Enter the team number when it asks. LN is 11899 :D

You can use the same machine ID for different machine installations. Different machine ID numbers are to be used when installing mutliple client apps onto one system. It is my limited understanding that it is not a good idea to run multiple client installs with single processor systems as you get a performance hit.

There are 2 other questions during the set up about running a Proxy (which default s to "no"), and whether you want the console to ask permission before it connects to the net (defaults to "no").

BTW, one last important point. Make sure you have the team number in before you begin crunching or no team will get credit. Although you will keep your own grand tally of points going no matter where you go, teams get points only when they are crunched.

Don't be surprised if you do not see yourself on the team rank for a few hours after your first unit is done. It takes a few hours to update the stats.

Hope this helps:)

Many people have asked if there are any caching programs for Folding, currently there are none because of the way the folding program is designed. Hopefully with future development this will change but as for now there is no caching, so you pretty much need to have some sort of always on connection. or if you are on a modem you must allow folding to be able to dial-out.

What you are doing is contributing your spare CPU cycles to medical science. Cancer research takes an incredible amount of computing power to research the causes of cancer and the effects of possible treatment. By Folding @ Home you are donating computational power to the researchers who would otherwise need supercomputers or other methods of getting the research calculations done. Through distributed computing they have developed a methodology of breaking down the computations into tiny bits for PC's to work on.

In effect, you are contributing to medical science and the betterment of mankind by folding.

READ THIS (http://folding.stanford.edu/science.html) for more info.

This research will someday allow us to build new super-humans capable of defeating entire armies! They will eventually replace our race of homosapiens in a Gattaca like fashion, while preparing to fight the evil space monkeys.

Enjoy!

Because it's a great cause :D and a great way to compete :p

I've been using it on XP and have noticed to degredation of performance on games, but if you're doing something sensative (encoding, etc.) it'd probably be best to turn it off.

Noticed that this morning...although the LN sigs need to be updated yet. :\

The XP2000+ rig at my house has completed a WU since I changed the team number on it, and it was successfully sent. Guess the stats just haven't been updated yet. It will finish another WU at about 1900 CST today...it is chugging along with about 3 min frames! :D

Hi Jammy,

Sure, we definitely encourage other teams to use our stats sig :) Some other folding/seti teams even have custom skins for use with our little program. Check out XtremeSystems or OC Forums, a couple other places :)

Anyway, theres a sticky thread here describing how to code things. Heres XS.orgs:

http://www.liquidninjas.net/dc/ln_dc_sig.php?xuser=hardass&xteam=3365&xskin=f_xs

http://www.liquidninjas.net/dc/ln_dc_sig.php?xuser=hardass&xteam=3365&xskin=f_xs

Just change the xteam parameter to match your team number, and your username changes accordingly. Let me know if you have any other questions :) If you have a skin youd like to use for your team, we can work one out for you guys too :)

Welcome to our boards :)

So does that mean it runs idle or lets other applications such as games have the cpu?

Drake

Its priority is idle, so whenever another app requests CPU power, F@H gives it up. There is no performance intrusion, only added heat from running 100% full load all the time.

Wacky used to have a link in his sig where a system was benchmarked running F@H and not running, there was no difference.

I will have both systems runing this folding@home. I can fire up my old PII and PIII's but I dont think it will make any diference.

Yes finishing a frame is good. :D Most wu will have about 400 frames.

What application did you use, the screen-saver or the console (dos box). The Console is alot faster, but other than upgrading your computer thats as fast as it will run.

most certianly did, I have both my coms at home crunching (main running text, and visual versions, secondary running just text) and brought my USB mem stick to work with me to crunch some at work with text version. Just hope that doing it here at work will get something done, since it will only be in there for 7 hours a day.

Will credit finally show a few hours after my first WU completion? I didnt realise it took so long to crunch this stuff.. about 1-2 days per a unit sound normal?

yeah, about right at 11.5 multi:)
it takes up to a week for your stats to come in at first, then every day:)
If you fold it.....it will come:)

Losing folding power here @ work. Had to ship my 5 2.4 Xeon boxes to customers. Hopefully when my 2 athlons get TEC'd and my P4 gets some ram w/ a bit of FSB breathing room, I'll be back to 15Ghz of folding power again.

Yuppers! those represent the "stomps"(people you have passed) you have made in 24 hours. they will become few and far between when you come up to the 3rd floor ;)

another detailed stats page that shows your stomps (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_members.php?TeamID=11899)

I added about 12ghz that will be on and off over the next couple weeks. When I finish rebuilding all my home boxen, there should be another 6 or 7 Ghz to add.

gonna have a schedule in place soon to get unused nightime cycles our super opteron and quad xeon from 10pm-7AM

What would a "Critical Exit: Please see www.liquidninjas.com to upgrade to version 3" mean I did wrong? http://www.liquidninjas.com/dc/ln_dc_sig.php?xuser=your user name&xproj=FAH&xskin=s_marb (http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/teampage.detailed?q=11899)

It means you read some old info.

It won't work till you've been folding a bit.

Here's the new code.

Are most WU's 2500 frames or are they usually less? My system's goin at 1 frame every 1min 13 seconds, and its gonna take 2 days for the first work unit.

No no but seriously, I saw this place doing a Google Search for Overclocking Forums and see you also F@H so I'm here to lend a hand to the team.

See you around the farms and forums.

I've just joined your team! I used to study Genetics at uni and folding has arisen because of the human genome project. It's the next step in knowing the complete make-up of the human body and how it works, so you're all doing the world a great service - if you think about it, you're all taking an active role in what could be called 'The Human Proteome Project' ('proteomics' being the science of proteins rather than genes).

Genetic data is read in your cells and the data is translated into an amino acid sequence. This amino acid sequence is then folded into a 3D structure... protein. This folding occurs naturally because of the properties of the amino acid chain - some parts being attracted to others, while others being repellant. This is due to the charge on the amino acids - some +ve, some negative, some neutral. Positive attract negative, like-charges repel and neutral are used as simple structural building blocks.

So, as we know the genetic sequence, we can determine the amino acid sequences. We know the properties of each amino acid and so we can model the final 3D structure of each protein molecule! Awesome!

This sort of thing'd cost research groups a hideous amount of money due to the computational power needed and so the internet was enlisted to do what it was originally intended to do - improve scientific research and further the human race! Yeah, I know, I too was amazed when I found out that the internet was for more than porn and gaming!

Anyway, I've started folding and joined liquidninjas in their attempt to make the world a better place!

Cool, so now the link works too. Cheers Synth. I guess I can use that link for any sig I set up.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Any way to let it run in the background? I'm not sure how to edit the options in the console version that I have (FAH 5.04). Any tips'd be most welcome!

re-run setup and choose yes for run as a service.
open services.msc and start the service.
choose properties and choose restart service in all the fields.

done :)

There are some good pointers up in the stickys, Essentially you are looking to install it as a service, so it runs automatically in the background. There are also links to applets that do that for you up there too.

Hi all just want too drop a note cause I've been folding on your team for awhile and haven't been here much, nor reg'd (am now). I'm jamal's bro-in-law. Got my system and Mama's old TBird folding for the team (lilmean's system will be on soon to help) Invited a few friends too join and so far I see Jerry Mora has, with more on the way I hope! This is a great way for the system to do good while I'm at work or doing other things. Just glad to help!
