I need your collective input. I'm still working on my digital video recording box. You know, hooks up to your TV, lets you record movies/shows, pause live tv, etc. Not to mention act as high end dvd player and multimedia box, video capture machine, blah blah.

Okay, so basically it boils down to major features: TV-In and TV-Out. Currently I have the box configured with a Matrox G550 Dual Head and it looks great with TV-Out. What I don't have is a TV Tuner.

From talking to people on other dvr boards, the Hauppage WinTV-FM comes highly recommended. I can get it about $70 online, is fully supported by the software I intend to use, and has an IR remote. This card is PCI and will work in conjunction with any AGP card supporting TV-Out (in this case, the Matrox G550).

ATI offers the All-In-Wonder 8500DV. This is an AGP card and has TV-In and TV-Out, not to mention FireWire support and the RF remote control. I like the RF remote control because the computer is not sitting near the TV, and using the IR remote would be a pain. The 8500 of course also does 3D Games quite well, at least much faster than the Matrox G550. I can get the card for $165, and since I'd get the RF remote anyway ($50 value), this card would only cost me $55 more than the Hauppage, which gives me better software and 3d support. The downside is that the card is AGP, and won't work with any other graphics cards.

ATI is coming out soon with the All-In-Wonder 9700. This is also a full featured ATI card, but offers MPEG2 encoding/decoding, uses pixel shader technology to improve TV out and video editing features, has Component TV out support (like a good dvd player). It WILL work with add on TV cards and even supports picture in picture while doing this. It has the same remote, and is as fast as your standard 9700 Pro (not dumbed down like other cards). It has a better comb filter than the 8500DV and has 12 DACs for video as opposed to 9 on the 8500 (not sure of the exact number on that). It's $400 retail (and probably cheaper OEM but it's not available yet). I don't mind waiting a couple weeks to purchase this one, although it is expensive. The card sounds very impressive though.

So now I'm stuck. I do want the best possible video, although I'm not sure if the Ati is any better than the Hauppage/Matrox combo which would be $300 cheaper. The AIW products sound like they would have better software support compared to the very different and very less refined Hauppage/Matrox. I'll eventually be installing an Extigy 2 on this box for sound, so that's not critical. Thoughts?

Thought: I wish I had the cash :)

If you can swing it and still eat I'd get the 9700.

If you like food like I do find a used hauppage card and kick yourself for not buying the 9700 in a month.

That's what I tend to do :D

I would get the AIW 8500 that is the one I am getting for my PVR. The 9700 is nice but honestly how much are you going to game on it, and unless you have a Hi-Def TV you won't notice the diff from the 8500.

As for the Hauppage/Matrox combo I hear they are nice but I have never tried them but I have used lots of ATi products and I can say their 2D quality is impeccable. and the RF remote is great on the ATi.

So go AIW 8500DV

NY, what I heard about the 8500DV is that it forces you to make the TV the primary display, and that the software controlling mutliple screens is very needing. This was a complaint of one reviewer I read, and Im not even sure that the 9700 improves upon this.

Picture quality is of upmost importance to me, especially TV out. I have a 25ft run so need something with strong signal, and was actually thinking that for that long run, Component video would be better than S-Video cause of the extra signal shielding. The 8500DV is supposed to support composite, but you need a spare dongle or something, and im not quite sure.

It would be easier to make my decision if I knew WHEN the 9700 would be coming out. No, I wont be gaming much on this system. My main interest in the 9700 was what they call VideoSoap. I've seen some samples and it looks great. It uses the pixel shader to process the video files and makes even cable look much better.

The 9700 has MPEG2 encoding, but im not sure of the value of that. If im recording things to burn to a CD, id burn in AVI and then convert it down to WMV or Divx. If I had a DVD burner maybe i'd use MPEG2 encoding but... I dont know. Since im getting digital cable and pay per view and movie channels, a DVD burner may be a very good investment, and coupled with the MPEG2 encoder could really be a good combo.

The Matrox G550 has awesome TV out. I have a quick-rigged composite cable running to the tv, about 16ft. I have a 12 cable and a 3ft cable running together through a coupler, and its the shittiest cable you can imagine. It still looks great on the TV. The laptop has the Mobility 7500 and...it's TV out looks jittery and aweful, even using S-Video. Im worried that the ATI AIW 8500DV will have the same tv-out quality as im seeing on the laptop which worries me. I know the 9700 has improvements and such.

BUt you pay for it.

I've had experience with Haupaugge (er however ya spell it) and loved it :). At least while the tech support was as old as my system. Their support for older systems is absolutely horrid. Their newest version of the WinTV software didn't work at all with the set up and the resolution was limited to 320x240 and looked terrible when in full screen.

Mind you, though, that my card is three years old and big improvements have probably been made.

If you aren't planning on touching a game, I'd say stay away from the 9700, unless quality is absolutely necessary or ya have a bug ta go buy yerself one :D.

Ive had this up and running for the weekend and its awesome! The remote control rocks. The picture is a little more fuzzy because I had to add another spliter to the cable line, but when I get digital cable, this should be fixed. Pausing live tv and one touch digital recording is jsut great. I need to adjust the compression settings a little for better quality (i have enough CPU left over to do this). I had to shut down seti on this machine cause it caused some really bad lag. But, all in all, it works great!

ShowShifter.com ...its $50 unless you find the 5-finger discount ;)

Anyone know if putting a choke on an Svideo cable might help the signal at all? Okay, im probably a perfectionist, but it just doesn't look as good.
