Im helping a friend out who just got a DSL modem. The modem has a Router built in, but seems to be stuck in 'bridged' mode (ie, the PC is getting the WAN address, not a new internal LAN address). He wants to have multiple machines hooked up, so needs to disable bridged mode and enable routing mode.

Thats not the issue. The modem has USB and one Ethernet port outputs. He sais that a pamphlet that came with the service sais that the USB can plug in to one machine, and the Ethernet can plug in to a second machine for internet sharing between two PC's. I have never heard of this being done, and doesn't seem likely (the modem is programmed for Bridged mode remember).

I told him to just buy a cheap DLink switch/router, but I wanted to know if anyone else has heard of these kinds of modems working simultaniously through USB & Ethernet?

worst case, find the reset button, unplug it and hold the reset for 1 minute that usually sets the default 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and use the web based interface. the subnet is usually 255.255.0.0 at first but you can change it with the web based tools.
or
tracert an outside ip and the one listed right after the actual pc is the lan address of the router, unplug that usb crap thats for the share only i believe.
also most routers have no logon name just a password of admin in small letters.
see if the mac address is on a label and you can ARP it a new ip.
many options, give me a model maybe i can be more specific.
in my job i see at least 6-10 routers a week and have acess to manuals with more help if needed. let me know, i'd like to help!

Synth, thats not actually my question.

My question is if the router can have one PC connected via Ethernet, and another PC connected via USB. Can you do this, saving the purchase of a hub?

In terms of routing, some DSL modems have this capability locked out by the DSL provider. I have two modems here that use special firmware to prevent users from using them as routers. They are stuck in bridged mode. They would need to be reflashed in order to operate as routers.

I cannot confirm or deny the specific functions of that router, but I cna tell you that it would be the first I've heard of the ability for a router to do that. It's always been a "one or the other" choice on anything I'v ever used.
