The Protect Children from Video Game Sex and Violence Act of 2002, introduced by Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif., would apply to games that feature decapitation, amputation, killing of humans with lethal weapons or through hand-to-hand combat, rape, car-jackings, aggravated assault and other violent felonies. Twenty-one other representatives co-sponsored the bill, which was referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
That list would place a slew of popular titles out of the reach of teenagers, some of the biggest consumers of the games.

Same old story...the government trying to play the role of parent. Quite frankly, legislation like this makes me sick.

Don't get me wrong, there is definitely material out there in the world i do not want my children to see. But monitoring what they view on the home pc is my responsibility, not the US governments. The same applies to the television, books, and other media sources within the home.

I wonder how many tax dollars this bunch of garbage has cost me

Such wastes of resource at the federal level....such a shame when there are people on the streets who haven't eaten a decent meal in weeks...

People are always quick to point fingers at scapegoats like TV and Games, when in fact the problem lays in the very hands of these monster's parents.

Where do the kids get the guns for these school shootings eh? How long does it take these parents to notice that their kids are becoming violent/withdrawn/depressed and why isn't something done to help these kids before they explode?

We keep cutting money from schools, afterschool activities, social functions, things that might give these kids an outlet, a place to unwind, and we squander this money on things like Microsoft trials, Video Game legislation, and Clinton's sex life!

I remember public school. I remember what went on there. It was one step down from a prison. Not a good learning environment at all. The teachers were underpaid, overworked, and most didn't care. The administrators were only there to feel self-righteous and to collect more money. All the older people in the community had absolutely no interest in supporting the schools, and lobbied to lower school funds.

So the next time there is a school shooting, you might as well blame someone's grandmother.

Humans are violent creatures when disturbed. Video games are a RELEASE, not a CAUSE of this disturbance. Bad parents, bad schools, and too many people who just dont care...thats the cause of these problems.

hate to agree with people here, but the fault definatly lies with the parents more.

on our local news a few days ago we has a story that the ambulance service was being closed somewhere because of abuse to the staff by local children. they had been starting fires near the ambulance station, throwing stones at the staff and all sorts of other stuff.

i mean, whats that sort of behaviour about, it isnt needed and totaly wrong. god help one of them if i spotted them

toodles

I myself would blame the parents much more than any computer game or TV/Video ......although kids will watch say a martial arts film and then before you know it they are trying the techniques on friends or there little brother/sister.........But by far the biggest influence is the parents, you watch your kids try to copy whatever you are doing even simply finding the TV on/off button when barely crawling...its because they have been watching YOU!!

I dont think we give kids enough credit perhaps. A good point is the martial arts things....and the kids will monkey see monkey do. Heh...hell, I'll do the same things with my freinds, and were 20-30 years older.

The difference is, kids, adults, humans, etc...know the difference between play fighting and real fighting. Kids know the difference better than anyone im sure, wrestling with a friend and wrestling with a bully is quite different ;)

So yes, video games and violent media can sometimes arouse violent seeming 'play fighting'...something which is very natural, and actually can help create social bonds rather than destroy them.

A normal child will NOT have problems. I grew up playing streetfighter and doom, watching bruce lee and friday the thirteenth and transformers and thundercats. I wrestled and took kickboxing, and never once have I been in a fight (outside of grammer school), never once have I gone to jail or hurt anyone on purpose. Im just a normal boring kid who was taught manners and right and wrong by parents who were very loving and caring. Not that me or my family life are perfect, far from it, just this whole 'media breeds violence' thing is insane to me.
