I have been running a home network for a while now, with both my machines running XP home. I have my main rig connected to the internet and my second one connected to it. Now since I only have one legal copy of XP I decided to install windows 2000 on my second rig. After the installation I got the network to run but I can't seem to get the internet connection to work from the second rig.

was it working on both machines previously?
sometime you have to force it to manually ask for an ip from the server ... IE the computer connected to the internet.
also make sure you have internet connection sharing enabled.

Once everything is up and running (connected), run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP machine. At the end of the Setup it will ask you to make a floppy for other machines in the group...select yes and make the disk (do this for all non-XP machines in peer to peer).
Also, if connecting to machines peer to peer (no hub) use a crossover cable (different than a typical CAT5 cable).

xp internet sharing will create a residential gateway devive in net neighborhood, change gateway address on 2k box to 192.168.0.1 to invoke the share, there is some more involved but i need to know what appliances you have and how you connect; dsl, modem, router etc... i do this for a living and will be more than glad to help anyway i can!
also in the meantime, try analogx proxy till we iron it out. it works like a charm.

Ok here we go,
Tripodal - It was working when Xp was on both machines and ICS is enabled.
Mike - I tried the Network Setup Wizard but when I used the disk on the 2K box it said that it would not run on that OS.
Synthohol - I already changed the gateway address to 192.168.0.1 to get the network to run properly but the internet is still a no go. I have a cable modem hooked up to the XP box and a crossover cable running from the XP box to the 2K box.

occasionally the dhcp server thats enabled with ICS gets corrupted.. and diableing restarting and enabling ICS can fix that

try to ping from the command prompt, internal and external addresses. in ie explorer properties male sure in lan props NO box is checked, i dont see the reasoning behind it but on my lan when i did that it worked.
try to make a new connection on the xp box shared so the residential gateway share shows up in net hood, invoke on 2k and give a try.
if no go let me know and we can go from there.
do the 2 machines see eachother?? if they do the analog x proxy will provide some relief temporariily.
do you have pc anywhere? maybe i can help from here. just a thought.
if done right, the res gateway device will show up on the taskbar of the 2k box upon reboot

if connection was not shared ok you would not be able to ping isp from 2k, ck lan settings in IE and UNcheck all boxes and try:D

ipconfig /release - all adaptersbound to dhcp do not have dhcp addresses, The addresses were automatically configured and cannot be releases.
