After the $16,000.00 fraudulent charge to my AMEX a couple months back I felt it best to check my credit report and Mrs. Synth's too.
So having heard the commercial many times for CreditReport.com i signed up the both of us to have a look-see.
I will say the report was very accurate and detailed. I also let the $9.95 x2 subscriptions ride for 1 more month just to make sure there were no inquiries we did not make or apply for.
After the month I called and canceled both subscriptions to the credit watch service they compel you to join to get your free report. The CSR said both accounts would be closed.
The next month they still billed me, I called again and re-canceled, they apologized and said they were canceled. The next month I got billed again for just 1 of the accounts. so I called a third time and demanded a refund and that the accounts be closed once again. they finally listened and sent me a confirmation letter email.
Just beware, these people are like Herpes, you just cant get rid of them!!

dont get me wrong, the 9 pages of info in the report was very good, its just the attempt to cancel the service that was a PITA.

We need a law against these people. Did I ever tell the story here of when I worked for a dial up ISP? Our customer service people got punished if they took too many cancellations. The CEO and VPs used to joke about how difficult they made it for people. Most cancellation request calls had a wait time of ridiculous proportions. Why? Because most people would hang up after 30 minutes and not cancel the account. Oh and you better remember the phone number or personal information you gave when you signed up because if you didn't, you're getting $9.95 per month charged for a long time to come. And lets say you did manage to cancel. Oops! It got lost in the system, so another $9.95 you'll probably just 'let go'.
See the key here is to get as many little charges out of customers as you can before they do actually give up. People are usually willing to let $10-$20 slide just to be done with something. These little charges eat us alive and we see them every day.
This has been a pet peeve of mine for sometime, I'm sure I've complained about my experiences with Microsoft Xbox Live, IGN, etc, companies that made me jump through hoops to cancel services on auto billing.
Warcraft gave me a little more confidence though. It's a recurring bill but I can cancel online and it always works. And you know what? I keep giving them money anyway because I'm pleased as shit that I can actually stop paying if I want to.
Credit companies are assholes though. I had to get my credit reports for my recent move. Well something new this year with one of the big three. Yanno that free credit report you're supposed to get each year? Well in order to see it they ask you for your credit card and then the auto enroll you in credit protection service. You can't get your credit report without the 'value added service'.
I had to call them 5 minutes after signing up and printing out my credit report just to cancel. It took about an hour of them sales pitching me. Then I repeated the process with Abi so I could get hers.
I dont remember which credit agency this was. I couldn't seem to get free reports from the other two online, and I didn't feel like spending $30-$50 each on a three bureau credit score from some other place trying to enroll me in to the credit protection scam.
Well, anyway, we need a law to make it easier to end service agreements.

the instant defense we can take is to call the cc company and say we lost our card so you are issued a new one in a few days with a new acct# and the repeat billing will be gone.
sure its a pain but its better than being on hold for half an hour. and you cant use that card until you get a new one of course.
and the repeat billing company will contact you to get your new acct# but just say you cancel and there is nothing they can do.

I know whenever I have had to call my local cable company to cancel any services I learned that when talking to the computer, pick the button that says you want to add services. I never wait more than 5 minutes for that line, but when you get in line to cancel services it seems to take forever. Even more they try to convince you that you don't want to cancel it and even after that they try to sell you other stuff!
