I FINALLY went out and bought my HSF today.Brand new Volcano 9 for AU$53 and a 80mm Sunon 3000rpm case fan for AU$14.

After a very sloppy and unprofessional rig job of the case fan(sitting in 2 5 1/2 bays )(will do something better later)blowing cool air on to the memory,Hsf and Northbridge chip,I installed my Volcano.I thought I would try out the temp probe mounted next to the cpu core.So wnt ahead and did that..all fine and dandy. After having to fiddle with which sdram slots to populate withm my 2 256 Mb sticks,I got it running.

So have a guess what temp flashed up on my temp program(taken off the mb temp probe).

76 DEGREES CELCIUS!

and rising.

So i quickly turned it off and left it for 10 mins to cool.I then fitted the fan speed control and dialed up the fan to max rpms.

Turned on the computer...76 and still rising.

After ranting and raving for 5 mins,I took the probe out from next to the cpu.

One more try.

WOOHOO 50 Degrees and falling,it's now at a steady 47 degrees and the fan is operating somewhere round 2500 rpm(don't know exactly cause the fan speed software is trying to tell me it's 18000 rpm :P

Moral of the story...MAKE SURE the temp probe is next to the cpu core and not on it.Thats about the only think had happened, that i managed to slip it between the core and HS.

My previous temps were round 45 deg C for the mainboard and over 65 deg C for the cpu.

Mainboard now 32 Deg C and 47 for the cpu....I'm a happy boy now :)

Glad it worked out for you:)

Sounds like that CPU probe next to the core was keeping the HSF lifted off the core a bit. Consider yourself pretty lucky:)

Hi Greywolf,

Consider your lucky!!

You need to rub some of that luck off on Farabomb. :D

Seriously, glad you caught it in time. That almost was a costly issue.

Now you can crunch with the best of 'em.

Take care........

Hi Greywolf,

I just thought about this also.

In the BIOS, on many mobo's, there is an option to auto shutdown if the temp reaches a certain level, you determine.

On my MSI and Abit mobo's, I have it set to 70 degrees C.

So, if I do something silly like not get good contact when playing around with the HSF, I don't worry bout a fish fry.

Food for thought, anyway.

Take care.......

I do the same now Lee :D

XP's last 1.2 seconds without proper cooling.

Hi Fara,

That long?? :)

I keep saying that all electronics are made up of 100% blue smoke.
The trick is not to release it......:D

I'll have to check up on whether or not my Gigabyte Mb has the same function.

I don't know maybe it's just my imagination but even when I have the Volcano turned up to max rpms the sound is.....better....I don't mind it as much as the old HSF.

Hi Greywolf,

You will never be sorry for turning on the shutdown feature.
And especially as many times as we take off and put on waterblocks, HSF, etc.

Can't be too careful.

I have saved my butt several times. :D

Take care........

Couldn't agree more....the BIOS shutdown should be used....goood choice:)

An update:

I have turned the fan from a blower to a sucker :)

I have seen a 1 degree increase in Cpu temp but a 2 degree decrease in Northbridge temp.

My next step is to cut an exhaust over the Cpu in the side of the case, and to also cut another intake hole on the bottom of the case.

I plan on putting an 80mm Sunon Quiet fan in the side of the case, and either a 80,92 or 120 mm fan in the bottom.

I currently have a 60 mm for intake at the front bottom(fan off my old HSF) and a 80mm in the top between my PSU and Cd-RW (very tight fit).

Unfortunately with my case I can't mount the Cd-RW drive lower because then it cuts off the Ide connectors on the motherboard.

I'll have to build a baybus before I hook up anymore fans though as I have used all the supplied connectors on the motherboard.

Enough talking..time for more work :D

Hi Greywolf,

Sounds like you are getting a handle on the temps.

It takes time, but is fun and worth it.

Take care, and keep us updated........

I have since taken the fan off the top and mounted it below my exhaust fan and it is now blowing over the video card.

Seeing stable temps of 52 degrees Celcius on Cpu.I'm considering making the HSF fan a blower again and will put an exhaust fan above the Ram.

Will try that tonight.
