Windows doesn't auto detect device

Had to reinstall os (XP). Installing various device drivers from OEM discs.

Windows does not auto detect either my printer (HP J5780) or game controller (Wingman Force 3D). Device manager does not detect devices. Tried using different USB ports (get chime recognizing new hardware) but still no detect. Have uninstalled devices and reinstalled. Website help worthless. Help. Thanks in advance. Dave

PS, joystick worked fine before without power supply.

New insight...when I disconnect the external hdd everything works. Duh.
