IM not so happy with my cable yet. Forget the fact that they are TimeWarner/AOL, one of the worst companies on the face of the planet.

The cable guy is coming again today, as a matter of fact, for the 3rd time. I get great speeds, over 2mbit download now, with 384k upload cap. But, the shit is unstable yo.

The cable light just keeps going down...weak signal I guess. Its gone from being a daily occurance to being every 3 days or so now.

Cable guy #1 was about as bright as a cucumber. He replaced the RG59 with RG6, a better more powerful cable. But this didn't help at all. He didnt even check any signals or have any testing tools.

Cable guy #2 was smarter, a complete dick to me, but I guess if you deal with cable customers all day, you get like that. He did test the line, saw that the line levels were low, and there were other problems. He replaced a fault grounding block for me, and removed some sort of HBO filter they had placed on the line a while back. He fiddled with other things and it all looked good. And the cable modem works better now. But it still goes down too often for my liking. I can deal with once or twice a month. But this is like twice a week. And I dont mean it just goes down and comes back up. Usually when it goes down, its on and off for a couple hours.

So, cable guy #3 should be coming today. I dont think there is alot left for him to replace. Maybe Im just in a bad area and will have to live with it. Gah. I may in fact go back to DSL just cause it went down maybe 4 times in the entire year I had it.

PS - All cable guys are idiots...and this guy sooo talked down to me it wasnt funny.

CableDork "Oh, so you know how to build computers but you dont know what a direct line splitter is?"

MeDork "No."

CableDork (snooty) "Hehehe thats funny."

And so on....

Maybe I was supposed to know what that was. Apparantly it bends the space time continuum so that it takes the cable signal, all 100% of it, turns it in to 150% magically, and then sends 100% to my cable modem, and 50% to my TV.

No, not quite. Its used for digital cable signals. Its like a standard 2-way splitter, except the digital side of the splitter gets 100% of the signal (i kid you not) and then there is magically enough signal left to go to the TV. And no...this thing isnt powered.

Whatever it is, its supposed to keep my cable modem more stable, since im getting more signal to it. Okay. I assume this thing is actually splitting frequencies, sending 100% of the digital frequency range to my cable modem and 0% of that range to my TV, and then 100% of the regular cable tv signal to my TV. Thats the only way I can think of this thing working... apart from bending the laws of physics.

Or this cable guy was just pulling my yank. He's still an idiot.
