Dear fellow liquid Ninja members:

Once again I am attempting to poll your collective knowledge, perhapse you can assist me. I am looking to purchase a laptop for my boyfriend for when he goes to college in a few weeks. I am hoping to spend around 500-600$ for something, maybe even in the 500 range. Im looking for someething for him that he can play some games on. Im not looking for anything top of the line given my budget. Im hoping to find something with 32mb of video memory or maybe if im luckly something with 64 mb of video memory. Can anyone recommend me a good laptop in my price range?

So far Iv found this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250015309148&category=140083)

it looks decent, there is also this (http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?ref=froogle&pfp=froogle&product_code=52219716&cm_ven=froogle&cm_cat=&cm_pla=&cm_ite=feed)

anyone else recommend anything, im usually biased towards HP or IBM myself though hehehe.

THANKS again!

Considering used? Ive been buying used laptops for a while now and they always work out well for me. My current Dell 600m was about $600-$700 and has an ATI 3d card in it. Its not great, but it will play GTA:San Andreas or Unreal on lowish settings. It has faster 3d than the new Macbooks (unPro).

IBMs are my favorite laptops but theyre expensive. HP, Dell, Compaq, Toshiba are all about the same quality wise. I recommend going with a brand like this, as no-name branded laptops tend not to faire as well on the longterm.

That IBM looks pretty good. Im not sure if it has 3d acceleration, but a little research and IBM.com will show whether or not it does. 1.6Ghz is about the minimum you want for a laptop these days (its what im typing on right now). It gets a little annoying at times but...

Anyway, when it comes to used, you might find a Dell with better specs than the IBM for the same price.

aah i see, Iv always been a fan of the IBM thinkpads. Iv always had one for doing work, any games i play are on my desktop, and for the past while all Iv been useing are TabletPc's for my laptop which of course I Love.

Ill look into Dells, thank'ya

I'm a stinkpad addict. I also have a powerbook g4 I got really cheap from a friend but I just can't live without the trackpoint pointing device. For me I'm pretty much limited to IBM, some Dells, and a handfull of hp/compaqs/toshibas.

I'm leaning towards a T60 unless I can find a good deal on the new hp tc4400 tablet pc which has everything I want and then some.

You can't go wrong with IBM, although the Dell D620 (I think) are almost identical to the T60 but the SXGA+ screen option is cheaper, brighter and available with a high end dedicated gpu like the nvidia quadro nvs which is a laptop gamer's dream.

I think the T60 falls extremely long off the $600 budget heh
