My 3rd IBM started to get flaky, bad sectors delveloped making some areas of the disk unreaadable, IBM's DFT decared the drive to be defective. I've got myself a new HDD maxtor D740x 80Gb (which is disappointly slower then the IBM) and backed up all i could then erased the disk using the utility on the DFT disk - the drive is now reported as beeing totally ok.

Right, i know this drive is unsafe now that bad sectors have started to form (from previous experience once they start arriving the don't stop). With foresight i backed up the data log file the DFT disk creates so i have a log file which says the drive is defective and a printout of the screen with that message.

K, so armed with this evidence but with the drive actually testing as being alright, could i send back the drive and succesfully get a new one???

Man what has become of IBM? I remember when my brother got his IBM. He was so happy that he had got the "best" drive on market. Hell the little guy had to save up extra to be able to buy the thing.
Well he started to get problems after almost 1 year of having it, same exact thing that is happening to you Shep except he did not save the data log.
So here we where after my brother had backed up all his stuff to a maxtor that I pulled from my comp to let him use till RMA. He did the disk utility and it says that the drive is fully functional, all systems go.
He did not know what to do. He started to get ticked off that he had just formated it clean.
Never fear little bro. Remembering what someone on this board (almost 100% sure it was NY :) ) I pulled a hand towl out of the closet, wraped the drive in it, raised the drive above my head and released it. Did this a couple of time to be sure. My bro just stood there speachless and I told him not to worry, no way it was going to work now.
After recording the serial number to make sure he did not get the same drive back off it whent to RMA.
A little while latter my bro gets a 10gig upgrade in the mail.

Just food for thought Shep.:D

I don't feel bad doing something like that when the company lets you down in the first place. I mean I still remember when IBM was like the Gods of storage. You could not find a better drive than IBM. But somewhere along the line they started to care more about profit and less about putting out the best product for the consumer and look what happened to them.

Reminds me of the Cyrix chip company. They put out one bad processor and when in the toilet ever since.

Hope IBM is able to put it together and turn it all around. For me I would have to be inticed by something more than a 10 percent price diff between ibm and maxtor if they think I am ever going to try a drive of theres again.

Hi all,

If it is any consulation, IBM will no longer be making hard drives.

In the near future they will stop.

Take care.........

Ive recently sent some in to IBM. Just go to the warrantee area of the website. They'll make you send them the DFT report, and then give you all the info you need. As long as its still under warantee, you should be okay.

I'm on my 4th IBM disk. They are great for speed, crap for anything else, although I still keep going back.

Got a 60GB Jobby for £80 which I guess is about $110
