Adobe Continues to Improve "Intelligent Document" Platform, Releases Acrobat 7.0 With Integrated Security

Adobe Acrobat 7.0, the latest release, contains a document rights manager called LifeCycle Policy Server. Acrobat 7.0 gives users the ability to assemble documents from multiple sources, and create intelligent forms, with the ability to collaborate on projects inside firewalls. This last feature raises security concerns that Adobe hopes its Policy Server will put to rest, by enabling the selective application of policies to electronic documents.

Joshua Duhl, research director with IDC, said, "Increasing requirements to meet compliance and regulatory mandates for protecting individual privacy and corporate confidentiality have left organizations with a huge dilemma of determining the best way to control and protect information." He added, "And, as organizations continue to extend business beyond the network perimeter, they must look for solutions that help them protect data throughout the information lifecycle, as it moves from secure enterprise systems to documents delivered inside and outside the network."

Using this document manager, organizations can decide who can view a PDF document, and can set policies that decide if recipients can change, copy, print, or forward the item. The software, Adobe hopes, will provide assurance that only intended recipients can open a protected document. Adobe has integrated this security measure with standard LDAP-based authentication and identity management infrastructures for centralized document control.

Administrators can grant or restrict document-viewing privileges regardless of how many copies were delivered. A useful feature if privileges are mistakenly granted to users or if security measures unexpectedly change.
