Hi guys, ok, so it's christmas, and I got an ATI Radeon X800 pro, a new hard drive, and some more ram, my ram and hard drive run fine, no problem, but I can't find the drivers for my agp slot, or for my graphics card anywhere, thus I get no display when I boot up with the graphics card in.I run on wondows XP service pack 2, and the disc that came with my motherboard is known to not work with it, so I can't just load up the disc, but I can go to search and search through the disc for files and access them that way. I need help hardcore, it's a serial ATA hard drive if that matters (I'm sure it doesn't). I've tried looking on the ATI website, and every time I go to install the catalyst software, it prompts me as to whether or not I want to make some screensaver my default, no matter what I reply with, nothing happens. please help.

Err... you can search through the disk but you get no display? Can you clarify the problem?
If my suspicions are correct, you didn't uninstall your previous video card's drivers. Put in your old card, and follow this guide (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=752253).

thanks guys, the motherboard is an intel D865GBF/D865GLC. I uninstalled the onboard video so thats not a problem. When I insert the disk it start to read it just fine, but then the error message:"Internal Error, process timed out" pops up, followed by:"unknown error." After that I can go to search and find any and all files on the disk including the technical ones, which makes it hard to navigate, because I don't have the nice user-friendly interface. I checked the intel site and stuff a while ago when I first got it, and it even specified that this would happen with service pack 2, so that didn't just happen to me. but the result just makes it a whole lot harder. any ideas? I'm going to go check the bios now.

What is "the disk" ? The driver disk that came with the vid card? Or the motherboard?

The Intel Express Installer CD that the motherboard came with.

oh, by the way, I get no display when I've got the video card in (because the proper drivers aren't installed) right now i'm running with the onboard video

I uninstalled the onboard video so thats not a problem.
yes, check the option to first video device is an off-board agp slot:)
hopefully that will work

and because of that, everytime I start my computer, it automatically reinstalls the drivers for the onboard video. i chacked the bios too, it's set to use the agp automatically

No need to use the CDs that came with it; these links will be more up to date anywho.

the intel bios update worked fine, but when I try to install catalyst I get this error message: "Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software." I'm probably doing something really stupid and simple. if it helps here's some more info, lol. this is my first video card (clearly), before now I've just used onboard video.

Hello,
Lets clarify some stuff first. So you put the x800 in and you get to windows and it gives you errors? Or you put the x800 in and you don't get any video when you turn the computer on?

no video when I turn it on with the graphics card (because the proper drivers are not installed), the monitor doesn't get a signal, so I've taken it back out now. windows gives me errors when I try to use the motherboard's cd, so I can't get the agp drivers off the disc, and I have no clue where to find the video card drivers. everything I've tryed so far has failed.

All of those drivers you just mentioned can be found in my previous post. Give it a look.

Well if your not getting any video when you turn the pc on your having more problems than just driver issues.
Try the card in another machine, friends ect and see if you get video in that machine.

I think Wes is on the right track.
Usually XP will install a driver so the card will at least work, it won't work well, but it will work. If you see nothing then I would suspect that you have a bad card.
Is it seated nicely? Did you plug that extra power line into it? (I think they have one.)

I read your posts about how your X800 pro and I am having the exact same problem!!! Please tell me how to contact your friend Bryce that you talked about. When I turn on the computer it boots but the screen stays blank. I updated the chipset drivers and the BIOS like it said to do on ati.com but it still doesn't work. I have an abit IC7-G MB. Please forward this email to your friend or send me his email address. Or, if you know what he did to fix it PLEASE tell me. I am pulling my hair out.
Thanks

If you read back to one of his posts, he tells when he checked the device manager, it still showed the onboard vid, which means he didnt have it turned off in the bios.
Thats what Brice did, I would almost garantee it.
ALLHAIL, yours sounds like you installed things in the wrong order when you set the mobo up on install. Go back, install the INF drivers first, then follow the instructions on the mobo CD driver disk.
Make sure its booting to AGP in the bios, and not PCI. Set the AGP size to 256mb, and be sure the frequency is set to "fixed" on the AGP bus in the main bios menu.
Uninstall "all" previous drivers for graphics cards, reboot, clean disk, and get all the old folders in "Program files" that belonged to any graphics card out. Any ATI software must go!
Install the card, but dont follow the install window when you get to the desktop. Close those out, and it will tell you there was a problem installing the device.
Go to the driver install pack you have, install it, and let it reboot. You should be good to go now. If now, I can get with you on the ph. and maybe walk you through it, but you "must" try these things first.
Also, kill the overclock until the drivers are installed, set mem timings to SPD, basically, set all timings, vcore, fsb, etc, to defaults while loading "any" driver if you want a clean install.

Thank you all for the responces, but after being on the phone with ATI for an hour or so the senior tech said he didn't know what it could be. He said that every once in a while you just get a MB, vid card, power supply combination that does funny things. He said it was no guarantee but it might be fixed by juicing up the power supply. So I went out and replaced my 400W with a 550W and guess what? It works flawlessly. What a pain in the :mad2::mad2::mad2:. Anyway, according to ATI and the techs 400W should hav ebeen enough but this beast just needed more power. By the way, I the guy who had his friend Bryce fix his computer sent me a PM and he said his card was also just not getting enough juice and that is what fixed his. So there you go. Never try and save money when you buy your power supply. Go for the big one apparently. Thanks again everyone!

Its always important to let us know what your system specs are up front. That way we can help you better. If we had known you were running a 400w PSU on it, that would have been the "first" thing we told you to change.
The specs for that card imply that it needs more than 450w to maintain, and the system you run is powerful apparently, so less than a 480w would be too little in my opinion.
Its good you got it all in order either way. Theres no worse feeling than knowing you have some great equipment, and it wont run because of some ghost in the machine you cant always find easaly.
Good luck. ;)

Ok so once again thanks for all the helpful info. I have been playing Half Life 2 with all the video settings maxed out and it is freaking great.
I hope you don't mind but I thought I would pose two smaller issues here and see what you have to say.
First, as Prometheus rightly suggets, let me give you my complete system breakdown so you know what we are dealing with:
P4 3.2 Northwood 800 mHz FSB
1GB Corsair Dual Channel DDR (2X TWIN 512 chips)
WD Serial ATA 10,000 RPM 74 GB Raptor
Abit IC7-G Max II MB
ATI X800 Pro AGP
Antec 550W Power Supply
Sony DRU-700A Dual-Layer DVD Burner
I think that about covers it. Now, I have my monitor hooked up to the DVI slot and when I boot the computer it does not show anything at all until the windows desktop comes up, then it is all normal. The only way that I can see what the going on during the boot is to hook up the S-Video out to my TV. That is how I have been accessing the CMOS etc. So that is one thing.
Next I was reading on ATI's web site about the DVI to component adapter so you can hook up a 1080i signal to an HDTV.
This thing: http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=2537967
Now as you will see if you go to that page, the adapter is not listed for use with the X800 family of video cards. Of course the X800 comes with the S-Video to Component wire. Is that the way X800 users are meant to hook up to HDTV? Can I buy one of those DVI to component adapters and get a better picture than with the wire adapter that came with the X800? Just curious if anyone out there does this sort of thing. I would love to play Half Life 2 in 1080i and hook up the tower to 5.1 surround sound.
Well, that is about it. Thanks again for your help.
