Got the youngin's XBox Live for Christmas. I have one (1) cable modem for primary desktop doing double duty between XBox and PC (disconnected from one and plugged in the other, visa versa). Short of wireless router I guess I'm obligated to purchase another cable modem. Question is this:

I want to run XBox Live through big TV (cable). How best to switch use between XBox and TV for regular programming? Splitter?

For best performance, do NOT split the line the modem is on.

Besides, a cable modem (IIRC) will probably cost more and ultimately be of less use than a router (wireless or not). On top of that, it's a lot easier to run cat5 through the house than coax

Cable modem cost atleast $150(and likely quite a more unless the prices have plunged since last I checked)

Wireless router/gateway/firewall As cheap as $50 dollars(and cheaper on Ebay)

Definitly just get a router mate. It's a much more versitile solution.

If your TV has multiple inputs then you can just use a second set of RCA jacks. If you only have one set of RCA jacks, you can use that set for the XBox and use the RF input for the cable. Then use your remote and switch between the two, usually its the INPUT button on remote or SOURCE. If neither of those options work for you you can always have a Stereo Receiver handle the switching duties or you can but a small RCA video switch similar to this

Hope this helps some

I thought the same thing, when I first read it.

Dlobue wanted to split the cable line so he could have cable TV for his TV and cable broadband for his Xbox off of the same line.

Pick up a cheap router, plug the cat5 from the modem into the WAN port and run cables to the x-box and the PC. Works with my x-box, PS2, and 3 computers.

A newer TV will have RCA, S-video and maybe component conections. Should be more than enough inputs without needing a switching system.

Unless I'm not understanding the question. ;)

R all routers these days wireless? I'm not opposed to hardwiring ethernet cable to different rooms if it's cheaper (could be a nice little selling point when house goes on market (I'm done with living in hurricane country!)

Netgear (http://www.netgear.com/products/consumer/prod_router_wired_hm.php)
Lynksys (http://www.linksys.com/products/group.asp?grid=34&scid=29)

Here's some choices. Any router should serve your needs.

Does this look right? This is only proposal not reality.

Looks good to me

[Edit]: If you do get a wireless solution, they do make wireless adapters for the Xbox

Kool. Is there adapter that allows running video output from XBox to video monitor instead of TV?

Just answered my own question. Component to VGA transcoder adapter.

One adapter is made by VDigi (Vd-Z3). Haven't found a vendor. If anyone has a line on where to find one post it. There's another marketed by Key Digital for >$200.

You might have a hard time finding it online, but if you check any electronic/gaming store you may find one. I think I saw one for $80 once, but I may be thinking of the HDTV adapter.
