So, what's the deal with Steam?

I've read some complaints here and there that you can't play Half-Life 2 on dial up.

Do you have to connect to servers every time you wish to play, do you have to stay connected while you're playing?

Has anyone seen anything official about this?

Could one of you with DSL or cable unplug your network cable while playing and see what happens?

I'm not going to pay $50+ dollars for a game that I can't play just because Valve doesn't want to lose money. (Does that make sense?)

Thanks for any info.:)

hey bud, you can play HL-2 in offline mode.. but you will have to unlock your files once the game is installed. (takes 20-30 mins @ DSL)

So that is at least 5 hours for me probably more.

Why are there offline/online modes? Does something different happen when you are online compared to offline, if not then why have 2 modes?
