I am in the process of building a new gaming pc, and I am trying to decide what lcd flat panel to get. I would like something that is a good value but is also a good monitor (don't want any issues with ghosting). I am looking for something in the 17 to 19 inch range. Also I would like it to have DVI hook ups because my new video card (6600 GT) has this capability. I will be playing Doom 3, HL2, etc. and also be doing normal school work (surfing internet, typing essays). Let me know your opinions.

Opinion ... get a CRT, don't bother with LCD. You want good value, good LCD and no ghosting at 17" or 19" ... well for me the current 12ms LCDs don't cut it for fast action games (mainly FPS). Perhaps for you it would be ok, but to get a 12ms LCD in the size range you want won't exactly be great value if you know what I mean.
Everyone is different so don't take my word as gospel. I have personally tried a few top of the range (as in REALLY expensive and the best you could buy at the time) 17" and 19" LCDs with response times of 12ms and I could see the ghosting. Some people don't notice this as much as others, or not at all in some cases. My best suggestion to you is to go to a local retailer (or whatever) and purchase an LCD that's within your parameters and try it out at home. If you don't like it just take it back and get something else (as in a CRT LOL).
I do have high hopes for the new 6ms LCDs which should be out any time soon.

Well I just don't have room for a CRT screen (at one point tried to fit a 17 inch CRT screen on my desk and it just barely fit - as in barely any room for keyboard). My new computer is replacing a laptop and LCD is the perfect fit for my desk. I think any screen will be an improvement over my laptop. Could you post some links to articles about these new 6ms LCD screens?

Buy a new desk, it'll be cheaper and a whole lot better for you in the ling run ;) LOL
As for reviews of the 6ms LCDs I don't have any links at hand, and right now it's almost 3am so I'm off to bed. Do a google search or something for Benq and/or 6ms LCD.
Oh and :D:D Welcome to LN :D:D

And then there's me on the other end of the spectrum who is very happy with my LCD with a response time of 25ms. And I'm a gamer!

Same here wacky. My 15" AOC LCD with a response time of 27ms works great in every game i've played. No ghosting or anything.
There are other things to look for besides response time i'm sure, but i don't know what they are. We had a 15" BenQ here that ghosted like crazy.

I'm with wacky and wes, i've had my 17" lcd for about 4 years now and honestly dont know the response time. but i can assure you its no where close to 12ms, i'm sure its more along the lines of Wes and Wacky. I love it. its crisp and i havent had any problems in games...well.....since this one is older it cant really support the high resolutions, but its high enough for right now.
I'm sold on LCD's i can't see myself returning to a big bulky CRT. But then again maybe i just like how damn cool they look....

Samsung 172X: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-001-146&depa=1
Samsung 710T: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-001-164&depa=0
Those are the two monitors I am considering. I really like the appearance of the 172X very sleek. I don't really see a difference in the two monitor's specs (the 710T might be slighlty brighter). Does anyone have either of those montiors?

If you can, I would recommend that you go to a tech store and compare the LCDs with your own eyes.

i have one of these http://viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/proseries/vp191b/ and i noticed at little ghosting at first but after a day it went away. and i have played ut2k4 on it and it still looks great with not ghosting.
but i would suggest this

the exact same moitor but with a 12ms repsonse time. i will be getting one since it looks like my current monitor and have dual monitors.

TDH, I think what you mean is when you first got the TFT you could see the ghosting but after some time your eyes adjusted to it so that you no longer notice it. Ghosting just doesn't go away, your eyes just filter it out ;)

Best Buy will have this Samsung LCD (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1077628276997&skuId=6465434&type=product) for $250 on black Friday. I don't think it has DVI inputs though.
