Half-Life 2: First Impressions!

Hey guys,
First of all, I'm glad that valve waited to ship it. This game Rocks!!

I won't give any details or anything, but it really is an experiance!

Steam rocks, I didn't think i'd like it, but once it was 3am EST (12am PST) it unlocked the game in about 10min and I was up and playing by 3:15am.

I'm running it on my Dual Xeons at 2.49ghz, 512mb ram, FX5200 with DX9c with medium qualitly settings graphics and it runs flawlessly.

Man I didn't want to quit playing, but I had too otherwise I wouldn't be able to get up for work.


Man I can't wait to play more.

PS: This game is 10x better than Doom III.

OMFG! I just played some HL2 here. Wow...the level in this game just BLOWS my mind. I mean, I was playing in the damn playground and everything worked. I was picking up TVs which would unplug if I tugged too much, then I threw them out the window, at which point everyone in the room got nervous and said they'd really be in trouble now. Everything in the game DOES something. Steam is working pretty good...a little slow on the Loading... parts but not bad otherwise. The headcrab bit is hilarious. "Im glad to see the suit still fits you like a glove, well the glove parts anyway" LOLOL. Sorry, trying hard not to spew spoilers (which none of these are really, no emails!)

Yes, Everything works its crazy. I thought the funniest thing was picking up things (bottles, cinder blocks ect) and throwing them at the guards. They'd get pissed and run after you with there cattle prods. lol.

Oh, Im playing for now on a P4 2.4C and a Geforce 5200FX. 800x600 resolution, but fairly high settings. It looks great and runs real smooth, even on this thing which isnt meant for gaming.

On a side note, I managed to muck up my system (big surprise huh). I was playing with a Ti4400 that i thought might be ok, worked fine for about a half hour in HL2, then locked up. Put my Fx5200 back in and now the system hangs on startup :( I want to play :(

The CDROM version, which I have no clue how many CDs it is, is about $55 there.

Gah, I cant put it down either. I see what people were saying about how it might be a little too easy. So far, it is. I mean, Ive died my share of times. But never more than once doing the same task, cause the game is full of shortcuts for killing things it seems. Hmm. Plays great on the 9600 Pro...even better. I wish my gaming rig was finished...i wanna see this thing at full spec.

I hope it's not a short game...ive gone a looong way so far.

Yeah I ordered it from Play.com for £30 ... it was dispatched yesterday so it'll either tunr up later today (Unlikely as it's almost 2pm already) or it'll arrive tomorrow :)

I got stuck here too for a while. To the right of you in the picture, behind the pipes (above the water) is a valve you turn.

Go to the top level of scaffold, then to the right corner and start dropping down. You want to drop down to the pair of silver color pipes that run diagonal. You can get to the valve from there.

OK my copy of Half-Life 2 just arrived so am about to install ... love the total lack of a manual, talk about cutting corners!

BTW am I reading this right, according to the quick reference card you have to have an internet connection to play single player Half-Life 2. From what I'm reading even after installation and all that crap you have to go through with steam you need to remain connected to play ... if you don't, apparently, then the game won't work. Am I reading that right? Doesn't bother me too much, just seems strange LOL

Well I was laughing earlier, now it's my turn to be laughed at ... Half-Life 2 will NOT install :( I get te stupid error message about hl2.ico not being found in hl24.cab (or some such shit).

Anyone know a solution to this? ... other than downloading the warez version which kinda defeats the object of buying the game.

Got it sorted. Apparently if you choose not to install Counter Strike then the game chooses to tell you to kiss it's a$$ and won't install. Now that's stupid.

Anyway got it installed and played for a while. Must say that valve has created one of the most long winded, pain in the a$$ and totally confusing installation proceedures known to man. What happened to the simple insert disc, install and play method? LOL

I'm very impressed with the game, about the only thing negative I can say is load times are longer than you're led to believe. All reviews say load times have been cut right down in order to maintain game fluidity. Yeah load times may have been cut down, doesn't mean they were cut down to a low figure LOL

Game feels kinda slow, but I guess things will pick up.

I guess engines still aren't perfect. Somwhow, I was able to physically fuse a cement block to a door :P

I just finished playing about 4 hours worth. Yeah, it's allright ;) Naa it's great :D I'm glad it finally picked up. So far, I think the funnest thing I have done is run over the bad guys with the air boat :D

Just got through the outer bit of the prison using the bugbait weapon.

Thats great fun gathering the creatures together then poking your head round the next corner throwing the bugbait round and then just retire to a safe distance while they tear the enemys to bits.

Only time I had to do any fighting was with turrets and gunships.

i have played about 5 hours straight of half life 2 nd i must say this is the best game i have ever played. i know i am late to the party but this game is sweet. i have a question though. through out the game there is sometimes a cracking noise and i dont think it is the game. it sounds like someone is yanking on the audio cord causing interference. is the noise suppost to be there, i dont really think so .

How many times does it take to power throw a cup towards a bad guy before he goes down? ;)

I'm partially impressed with the physics. I threw a saw blade at a 45 degree angle towards the floor, and it stayed STUCK at a 45 degree angle. But when I found a tire hanging from a tree tied to a rope, I was dissapointed that when flinging it around it didn't get wound up around the tree.

You guys think that is something too difficult to program or was it simply something overlooked?

Not as creepy as DoomIII though. I still think DoomIII is just as good as HL2 gaming wise. IMHO both have their unique perspectives. I'm not saying one is better than the other. Both are great to play :)

i think doom 3 has nothing on half life 2. doom 3 looked good but half life 2 is way ahead in gameplay and just about on par with doom 3.i wonder what happens when the gravity gun goes blue. the gravity gun is pretty cool but not very good for fighting, just for fun

I guess gameplay will be different for everyone.

But come on...the gravity gun has saved me countless times!!

In Ravenholm , besides the saw blades, I found one of those home heating radiators. Well, at least that is what it looked like :) Throw it with the gravity gun at full force, and it has sliced through multiple bad guys in half. All it took was one shot and they were all down. In one of the courtyards, I must have killed a minimum of about 20+ bad guys or so with it.

Maybe you need to have that chick get you through G-gun training again ;)

Stuck in the train station? At the very beginning? woah.. walk along the fence where the two guys are standing, hang a right, then a left... the guards will force you to go to the left again, then right and into a room.

Well if my memory serves me at least.

You got stuck at the beginning!? LOL I thought it was pretty obvious where you had to go, either that or a little exploration and trial & error usually gets you to where you need to be :)
